p.1 #1 · So Cal Beachs - They are Different

As I have fall color on the brain, and am just 2 days away from a little trip up to the Sierras to shoot said color, I thought I would post some color of a different kind... Here are some shots from a few of our Southern California Beachs. It shows just the variety of the beaches that one would see be just driving another mile...

The web version quality in some of these is quite lacking, sorry! I have learned some better techniques, but still have to go back and apply them to all my shots.

#1 - Little Corona of Corona Del Mar - Look at just how many rock structures are packed in that small area!

#2 - Little Corona again

#3 - Little Corona is even cool when the sun goes down, because there is a flood light that shines on the arch (arch not shown here)

#4 - Laguna Beach - North end has some rocks but not as many as Little Corona

#5 - Laguna Beach - South end has more rocks but not as many still as Little Corona, although it can get some huge waves.

#6 - Laguna Beach - South end again - The area right in front is kind of tide poolish, but the rest of the beach is just sandy.

#7 - Huntington Beach - Not a rock or a tide pool to be found within miles, but still cool nonetheless. A little sunset action

#8 - The local action at Huntington is all about surfing.

What a diverse and interesting series Jim, hard to pick a favorite but I think the last one nudges the rest out.

I agree with Al, great series. My favourite is 3, maybe a touch lighter? I love the deep purple colours.

I really like #5--looks like it would lend itself well to B&W. Good work!

I've been to all of these beaches and you are so right about the diversity. My hubby and I have fond memories of Huntington Beach (*ahem*). Numbers 2 and 7 are my favorites with 8 close behind. I would've liked 8 with the surfer more to the right of the frame so he would be walking into the image more. 5 and 6 remind of oil paintings I used to see at the Laguna Arts festival. All in all a wonderful series of images Jim.

There is a place in my heart, for the beaches in So. Cal. Used to work a block from the pier, when HB was still HB. Thanks for the memories. Great choice of images.

I live within 10 minutes of all those beaches and consider myself very lucky. It is so nice here now that school has started and everything is quiet few if any tourist at all, a note about little corona, if you are a "professional" photographer you now have to get a permit to photograph there and if you live in the city iof Newport you must also have a business license. I took my grandson down there a few weeks ago to take some shots and was confronted, I told them I was not a prof. but because I had a tripod, Nikon camera and tele lens they insisted I was a professional and proceeded to write me a ticket, my grandson kept saying, "she is my grnadma" the stupid guy would not listem, I told him "if you saw any of my photos you would know i am not a professional." He did not give me the ticket but I had to leave the beach, still trying to figure out how to prove I am not a professional, guess I need to carry a few photos in my purse.

Wonderful diverse series here, Jim.

My favourites are the 2nd and 7th image.

I've got fall colours on the brain to. All I need now is the weather to co-operate.

Diversity is the master concept in this series, so no fav. Well, perhaps the last for the excellent design
If this is your turf, then you're a happy man. I wish we had that kind of light and wildness in our parts.

Hey Al, thanks, I do like how that one came out, the rim lighting, etc, just worked perfectly.

Hey Ute,

Thanks, that one turned out super cool. It was a bit of a longer exposure, I don't recall now, but it had to have been atleast 30 secs. I will have to look and see if I can lighten it up without introducing any noise. Thanks for the idea, because it is a bit dark.

Thanks for the suggestion on #5. I did try it in B&W a while back, but at the time I didn't like the lack of tones I got out of it. BUT.... I did find a new B&W conversion routine that I like that allows much more changing of the hues, so I should try it again.

Hey Pam,

uhmmm, well Huntington Beach has been known to have that effect on couples.... uhhmmm, oh yeah, thanks for your comments! Good idea on #8, I will have to see if I can crop that one, or have another frame where I was wider.

Hey Jim,
You are hanging out at my home break in HB. Very nice series. We have to wait about 2 months for those killer sunsets. Love those seabirds and the low tide.

The compositions are excellent but a touch of tonal adjustment with Curves or Levels could clarify and enhance the tonal range.

Hello, Jim.

Lovely, varied selection here of some pretty nice places. I love the droplets and gull, caught in mid flight in no 2, the wonderful night time atmosphere of no 3 and the gorgeous golden beach in the last - not to mention the others!
