p.1 #1 · Vignetting

Hi folks,

I've seen quite a few wedding photogs that seem to have a real handle on vignetting a photo in Photoshop and making it look natural and not too much nor too steep a transition.

Mine never seem to look right. Anybody got any suggestions?

Hi Todd

One way I like to use is the dodge tool, use a large soft brush with about 20% opacity, select the hightlights and sweep around the edges, then change to the midtones to darken as to your liking.

Here's how I do vignettes: This method gives a more subtle looking vignette.

- Using the marquee tool, make a selection. I usually do an oval or rectangle.

- Feather a good amount. Hit Ctrl+shift+i to invert the selection.

- Now, with the selection still active, open a curves adjustment layer. Your mask should be attached automatically. Pull the middle of the curve towards the bottom right corner. A little goes a long way. You might also try changing the blend mode of the curves layer to soft light for a slightly different look.

- If you want a lighter vignette, pull the middle of the curve up towards the upper left corner. Try setting the blend mode to screen.

If you want a more dramatic, heavier vignette, rather than opening a curves layer after inverting the selection, simply open a new layer and fill the inverted selection with black or white. Then adjust the opacity.

Heres how I apply vignettes so that the user has the up most control over its strenght and placement

Make a new layer above your image and fill it with black.

Change the opacity until you get the strenght you need.

Add a layer mask to the black layer then choose a soft large brush to bring back the orginal image.

Using different opacitys and size brushes will give you more control too.

I've used this process..

Duplicate your layer
Use the gradient tool (choose the round one, check the reverse box)
"draw" your gradient on your picture (I start somwhere in the middle and just keep fidding with it until I get what I want)
Set your layer properties to something other then "Normal"... to something like "Darken" or "Soft light" and then set your opacity and fill to taste.

try the lens corection tool in Photoshop. Filter>Distort>Lens correction

Go to vignette and darken it. Looks pretty good but there is more control with other ways.

I just learned a really easy way to do this from Vincent Versace...

duplicate layer
change blend mode to overlay
use the selection tool in a shape you want the brighter area to be. Standard rectangle works just fine.
increase feather to somehwhere around 100. More if you want is smoother.
hit the delete key. This just deletes the selection with the feathered edge.

duplicate
blend to overlay
select
feather
delete
