Since so many asked and so few wrote about this printer here is a long web page with many of the discoveries I made with this printer. Ask away on this forum with what ever questions you may have.

Outstanding review. I had already pretty much decided on this printer but now I'm sold.

Metamerism? How bad is it really? Compared to your 130 would be fine. You may have already compared, but I skipped straight to the end.

Thank you, Neil, for the superb review.

A friend of mine is testing the printer. He has an exhibition now with a dozen prints from this printer at the Ordover Gallery, in Solana Beach, Califonia. They are beautiful prints. He says that the colors were perfect straight out of the printer with no adjustments! "If they looked good on my screen, they looked good out of the printer," were his words.

I am really looking forward to this printer, although I plan to wait for a larger version for 17 or 24 inch wide prints, and get by with my Epson 2200 until then.

Metamerism;
You probably all know that Epson greatly improved the illuminant metamerism with the recent K3 inks. Where as Epson propaganda states eliminated I think not. In serious lab testing it's still there and sometimes surprisingly present.
The 9180 is not as good as K3 in this respect. Some where there is a colour constancy metric but I haven't actually been in a testing situation where it came up. How much more metameric is the Vivera inkset over Epson K3? Small enough that it should not make a remarkable difference for most users. This is referring only to shiny media as I prefer the HP constancy over Epson on fine art media.
The colour shift is also different on HP than Epson in controlled light. Where Epson fail in office fluorescent lights in skin tones, HP do not. Where in daylight to tungsten changes HP HP change more rapidly than Epson in the grey balance.

It is a complex thing to write about and one that needs to be seen.
HP have print samples you can order now on their site from the 9180. You might want to order some to see how the effect of illuminant metamerism will play.

It's true that with the best profiles I make, the HP profiles now are in line with the excellent Epson K3 category profiles. That's a first from HP, and it's about time. I don't make custom profiles for this printer for the HP media. They are correct from the start, and the printed colour matches the screen.
For third party media between HP, third party manufacturers and remote profile services, there will be options coming to fit every need. This will take some time though . It can't happen instantly and we need to build a community quickly that support this printer line.
