Hi all,
I thought I'd post what I have been reading on other forums. There seems to be credible indications that Nikon will release a new pro digital July 22nd.
I know a person who is currently testing the new Nikon D2H for Nikon. Basically it is a 4 MP, 8 FPS and it features wireless technology. Sensor is still 1.5x crop.

Why would it be a 4 Megapixel camera professional camera when the D1x and D100 already delivers more ?? Even the Coolpix series betters that.
MP is just part of the story, the "H" series is all about RAW speed, PJ's need the sheer performance and choose the H over everything else, it is an awesome camera, nothing in DSLR comes close to it's buffer and write to card speed, 40 frames at 8/sec, is the projection, mostly for sports and newspaper work , can't do that with a coolpix !
Saxofonix, you cannot compare 4MP from a Coolpix and a DSLR. The sensor is much bigger, has bigger pixels which receive much more light and produce less noise. This was already discussed and explained many times all around.
What makes sense is the fact that the camera manufacturers tends to slow down the pixel quantity race.
My Canon 1D has "only" 4MP and produces high quality images. And will do so in 2 or even 5 years. And, today, the "old" D1X/H, D30 or D60 continue to deliver impressive results.
Chasseur d'Images just confirmed that it is 4 MP and the buffer / write speed will be impressive. A 9 mm plus another zoom in the DX series are on the tracks.
But, anyway, and again, my friend is currently using the new D2 in Japan and I have no doubt about the infos he gave me.

Gilles,
that's a damn shame for folks looking for a big res competitor to the 1Ds from Nikon. I guess the PJ market is probably the best segment to try and win in the Pro DSLR stakes...maybe they will have something to say about that subject come 22nd of July. I've read on other forums that if you search the trademark register Nikon reserved both the D2h and D2x tardemarks at the same time. Hopefully a high res solution is not too far in the future....
I tend to agree with you andimac, If Nikon has the rights to both D2h & D2x names, they just might have cameras for both names. Just as a point of speculation, it would seem that the pixel count on any D2x would be considerably higher. It really is important to keep up with the Joneses, time will tell.
Hi Gilles,
If you look at the R.Galbriath posts from the link in my orginal message it says-
quoting his quote "The invitation is to quote: "We present Nikons next generation professional cameras""
I think Nikon decided on this spec to keep its core PJ users in the Nikon fold. I know some formerly Nikon PJ's have jumped ship to Canon and got the 1D. Currently for digital PJ's and fast sports reporting there is NO camera that effectively competes with the 1D
This new Nikon should definitely satisfy Nikon shooters who have been looking at the 1D.
It's a pity in a way this is just a catch up as Canon is bound to come out with an upgrade to it's 1D (now getting on for over 2 years -- that long already !!) which might beef up the resolution, allow several cards to be used at the same time etc -- there is a large high end gap between the 1D and 1Ds which I'm sure Canon is looking at.
Nikon need also a high end competitor to the 1Ds -- hopefully at a much cheaper price
Maybe the DCS-14N model II
And finally some decent canon type IS lenses..
Although a Canon shooter I DO hope Nikon make a success with this new one. As well as forcing Canon to reduce prices (competition) it's always great when you are at a shoot to chat with people who've got different gear. I always find it interesting how different equipment solves various pratical problems.
Those who like to speculate on the coming D2, here are a few interesting links. Some of them are more precise in mentioning details than others. The main reason for the current rumors seems to be a Norvegian source who mentions he is invited for an introduction meeting of the "new generation of Nikon digital camera's" on Lofoten. The invitation comes from the Norvegian Nikon distributor.
Now that Chasseur d'Image has confirmed that they expect an introduction of a Nikon D2 credibility of these rumors grows. In general Chasseur d'Image is well informed. Have a start at one of these links if you like.
I was under the impression that the D1H and D1X were essentialy the same animal with the exception of the software interpolation that gives the 5.47 total mega pixel for the D1X vs 2.74 for the D1H
According to my spec sheet for both that is, maybe I'm wrong.
I 'll say one thing though and that is there isn't anything that comes close to a D1H when it comes to capturing a radical series of pic's of sports action.
If the claimed D2H does surface it sounds like it is D100 crossed with a D1X but with the speed of a D1H.
