good point. My 1.4 has never failed me. In almost no light it takes great hand held shots. (then again I'm a trained marksman) I'm just nervous (read: paranoid) about carrying so much glass with me on the plane and the possibility of having to check it in.
As for this test, it's been attempted by others before, and by pure physics the prime should be sharper (less glass to pass through). These shots here were used with limited hot lights, and not a deluge of plentiful light. So in that sense, the 50 prime SHOULD prevail. I'm sure under certain scenarios it would be equal, like outdoor, high noon, lots of light. That'll probably be my next test. This car I just grabbed off my shelf and turned out to be a good test since the lettering on the license plate is tiny!
More suggestions to benchmark would be appreciated.
(yes, I'm brining my 50mm f/1.4 now. Thanks guys! always can depend on ya!)

The 24-105 doesn't look to be correctly focused in the shots above. Also no point posting the full shot, the crops are what matters. And you'll want to test both at infinity and close focus.

You couldn't get me to take the 50mm 1.4 out of my bag. I love it.
For you, I'd say you could get rid of the 50mm for this trip, but buddy... think about those beautiful low-light sunset shots of your new bride, or the flashless pictures of her illuminated by candle-light at an outdoor restaurant.
