For a 20D user?

right or wrong?

if I'm a 20D user I'll uprade my glass or my camera for a 1D MK....or 5D.....

right...?

please advise the forum...

It is for a 10D shooter! But it's a minor tweak for a 20D owner (of course everyone needs a 2nd body). I'd upgrade immediately if it had ECF. Now I have to think about it. The 5D seems to be calling a little louder.

Unless you really really need a spot meter, ISO in the viewfinder and a 2.5" LCD upgrading from a 20D to the 30D just for the sake of a upgrade is not really worth it IMO.

If your upgrading from a older model or a 350D it may be worth it.

Sure it's an upgrade, it's just not a big upgrade for a 20D owner. Personally if I had a 20D I would be pleased.

a 10D user can buy a 20D for $800 bucks and get a good start with extra
money for GLASS!

Blowout, if you haven't used the 5D and seen the improved interface and screen etc then your opinion isn't worth that much. ISO in the VF, 1/3 stop exposure adjustment, bigger monitor - these are all upgrades that are beneficial to some. If you love the 20D so much, get one and then quit with the moaning.

It's not really an upgrade, more like an incrimental improvement...if you have a 350D or 20D, I'd skip getting a 30D unless you NEED something it offers. If you've got a D30, D60, 10D, 300D, or point and shoot, then it's a worthwhile upgrade.

though I must say that a 2.5" screen is nice when you're used to a 1.8"...

(and yeah, I do have one on order, but that's cause I may be getting that 17-55 2.8 IS with it

I would only buy it for its expanded ISO choices. As a 20D owner though, I wouldn't buy it.

i would buy one, because its an affordable second body for me

i made the jump from 10D to 5D and i could write a small novel on how happy i am about that move.

that 2.5" lcd is horribly addicting. id get the 30D over the 20D just for that!

i wonder if the viewfinder is as DIM as the 20D though? if it is i may have to think twice and get an older 1Ds

It amazes me that the camera is not yet in anyone's hands but there's already threads telling people not to buy it. Seriously folks...

We have no idea how much the AF routines help. We have no idea how much faster read/write speeds are (especially given the variance in CF cards). People have been complaining about not having a spot meeting in a 1.6 body since I joined this board...

I use my 20D on my 600 f/4 IS. You can bet that if the 30D offers noticeably better AF then I will consider the upgrade. I paid $1,000 in March for 20D body-only and I have no reason to believe we won't see the 30D occasionally dip into those ranges in the next year.

Canon are playing their loyal consumers in the knowledge that some if not most will bite and they'll get twice the money.

True, but for many the extra 5 notes is worth getting a new body with warranty and extra features (hate that 1.8 inch LCD). Plus, many used 20D bodies had the crap shot outta from by lead finger owners. I've been shooting EOS since 1990 I have 19 EF lenses (should sell off half of them!) and don't really need any more glass.

So Canon would have something to add to the 30D feature list. Maybe the 40D will finally have ECF. Remember the D30 and D60 only had 3 AF sensors? Canon has to hold back some goodies for the next model.

The only reason I haven't upgraded to a 1DII is because to some extent Canon is "playing" all of us regardless of what body we buy. Compare the 5D ($3k) to the 1DIIN ($4k).

Given that both cameras use CMOS chips with the same pixel density, the chances are that the 5D has lower yields than the 1DII (which has been in production for a lot longer as well). Add to that, the fact that 5D has a rebate now in the EU that drops it towards $2700.

So the 1DII is ~$1300 more expensive and it even uses a CMOS that is easier to produce. An EOS-3 has 45pt AF, weather sealing, and a mirror/shutter combo rated at 7fps and the whole thing only costs $900. So we know the upgraded internals aren't worth the $1300 price difference.

There's no technical reason they can't have a 1D3 by upgrading to the 5D's sensor and giving us the option of 8fps @ 1.3x, or 5fps @ 1.0x.

That's the camera I'm hoping for.

Hope is rather meaningless when you have jobs to do today that can benifit from the best tool around. I had a 20D a while back, but I needed the 1D mkII then as I do today. So what if Canon makes something better in the future, what do I shoot with this weekend ?

It's a nice refinement. Sure if you have a 20D you don't need to, but why would you need to upgrade just because something has new bells and whistles? There's loads of idiotic talk going on....how many improvements warrants an upgrade for those not really making money in or because of their photography? You are snapping away fine today, but if something with X number and kinds of upgrades comes out you need to drop another 2K? It doesn't make sense.

For me there's a nice spot in my even coverage gear lineup for a 1.6 body. For the lens offerings, reach, and smaller raw file size. I loved the 20D and it's about time to get another crop body for my lineup. I didn't want 10 or 12MP files and I didn't want the new camera to be 1800 bucks. It's a great camera for me as I need a new body, the price is right as it's the same as a 20D was but better. I don't know how often I've missed shots because of that stupid toggle (the Nikon AF point selector was so much nicer)...this for me is enough as I was going to buy another body anyways. I'm glad that manufacturers are realizing they have great cameras out and that they don't need to make "great on paper" upgrades every year but tweak and refine and not run the risk of a whole new series and whole new set of err99's every year.

Let's see, spot metering, iso in viewfinder, 1/3 stop ISO increments,selectable shooting speed in continuous drive mode, huge lcd.

Which of these are not major improvements? How many times have we seen posts of people crying to Canon to add these features in a consumer dslr? Now we've got them available.

Did you happen to notice all of these improvements come at a lower introductory price than the 20D?

If you want 1 series features, you're gonna have to buy a 1 series.
