I love the speculation. From my sources deep inside the Canon research lab I found out that the 1Dx series replacement won’t be announced until Febuary of 2007. It will be called the Canon D. It will have a full frame sensor based on equilateral triangle pixels arranged into hexagons. This will allow for 28 - 30 Mega Pixel range but will require special image editing software to fully utilize. Sensors will be based on CYMK vice RGB. This combined with the hexagonal pattern will improve color space and allow wider gamut. Additionally, advanced sensor circuits and digic III processing will allow for patterned de-rating of about half the pixels to greatly expand dynamic range at the cost of about half a stop of sensitivity. Max frame rate will be about 7 FPS. The delay in the release date gives em time to pull all this off. The 3D will be a more traditional camera released as a stop-gap in late 2006 with 22MP FF and 5 FPS in a 5D sized body, but sealed up like the 1 series.
Oh, I forgot to mention, the new FF sensor, because of the triangular pixels, does not require an anti-aliasing filter, resulting in higher sharpness and better contrast right out of the box with out any artifacts.
In reality the new 1d update or merge will be a 2.5 inch LCD or maybe 2.75inch LCD..
You might get picture styles 2 and a second direct print button.. Also don't be so sure you will get more mpix.. It wouldn't surprise me if they went down to 12mpix full frame sensor and called it a upgrade and slap a 8K$ or 10k$ price on it.. I think canon now has come to the conclusion that most canon users are idiots and will buy and believe anything they say and produce.. Just look at what the they did with the 30d!! I see people say wow it has a 2.5 LCD!! I mean damn a 249$ point and shoot has a 2.5 inch LCD now!!! Oh it has a spot meter.. Hell even the low end Nikon D50 had that..
And I am canon user. I don't know for how long.
You must not realize that the 1dsmk2 already has a 16mpix FF sensor ..
IT would be a downgrade.. .. Now for a tweener it would work if they put a deep buffer and faster framerate.IT wouldn't be worth 3500$ however. IF not you would have a 5d rehash at a higher price..
I do to receres.. I agree with you 100 percent.. But the reality is look at what they did to the 20d.. I think they will do the same for the 1d series also.. 22mpix 1d would be great but I think it will be the same as that 10-12mpix 30d.. Just a dream.. Canon is going to make us wait till we are grey haired or dead before we get those cameras. I am glad sony is getting into the DSLR market it will make canon get off their ass and give us the features that could give us now but choose not to. I am not a sony fan but I have a feeling they will be very aggressive. And unless canon is aggressive they will get their asses handed to them in the lower end market 2k$ and under.. Most of these people don't love L lens like we do.. So canon's great lenses will not be a factor. But sony's brand name will help them sell alot of DLSR's for the average user.
