p.1 #1 · 75-300 USM (no IS) or Sigma 70-300 APO DG
There aren't too many direct comparisons between the subject lenses (many exist for the non DG version)...does anyone have any experience with both of these? I don't want to spend the $$ on the IS or any of the longer L lenses; I'm just looking for the better of the two of these to get my feet wet with longer lenses.
There is plenty of talk of how soft all these lenses are at this cost, regardless of manufacturer, but I'm looking for the sharper of the two. Some of the sample photos I've seen at ephotozine show the Sigma significantly softer than the Canon, but the test conditions aren't the same.
p.1 #2 · 75-300 USM (no IS) or Sigma 70-300 APO DG
yes, i own the sigma and my friend owns the USM, the USM is not like the 28-135 USM, the USM on the 75-300 is VERY slow. The lense is twice the size of sigma, sigma has the macro function. IT is a better lense for sure. dont get tricked by the USM label.
Sigma focusing is slow and noisy tho, what can you expect right?
p.1 #3 · 75-300 USM (no IS) or Sigma 70-300 APO DG
The sigma is a nice lens, especially for the cost (the APO version). I found the image quality on par with the OLD 75-300 IS from canon with the IS turned off, but I've heard the new version of the IS lens creams the old version.
The APO DG is the newly coated version of the Macro Super II, and I've seen some incredible shots out of that lens.
