p.1 #1 · 30D, 3D, 1DS RS

I think the title says it all for itself. I've come into information suggesting the following. Whether Canon will choose to release them all during Photokina remains unknown. However, the following is what I've found out so far.

30D: Digic 3, 10mpx

3D: Digic 3, looks similar to 5D on the outside, FF, priced between 5D and 1DS RS

1DS RS: Pellicle system, reminiscent of the 1N RS. 5fps on the full 18mpx, 8fps (on a crop maybe?), 18mpx, not built as well as the 1DS Mk2, Digic 3, priced somewhere in the $6,000+ range.

10-22 mk2: Better build, to eliminate some wobbliness.

40/1.4 or 1.2

17-40L to be discontinued

Italicized parts = not 100% solid, but pretty darn close.

Here is a link to the film-equivalent of the upcoming 1DS RS. Go figure.

What is interesting about this piece of news is that if true, Canon has now a complete set of FF cameras, from 5D, to 3D and 1DS RS. This mimics their film series of EOS-5, EOS-3 and EOS-1 series. VERY VERY interesting. This could tempt a significant segment of film shooters to move to (more) affordable FF. The decision to retain a 30D/350XT pro-/consumer series will also bring in most of the moolah for Canon.

And before you start flaming me, my source has actually handled the 1DS RS himself. Just thought I'd share it with the larger community. Let me emphasize however, that this is not a prediction on whether Canon will be releasing them in this final form. I'm simply passing on some tidbits of information, nothing more. If it coincides with their eventual release, all the better.

I'll be editing this if I get more information. It's not too nice to keep trying to fish for NDA-protected info from your friend and put him at risk.

Isn't Photokina in Fall?

Will there still be a 35D?

If canon already showed us that they can make a normal shutter that shoots at 10fps with the 1v-HS, why would they use one that causes a 3 stop light loss?

Well all I can say is that my friend has evaluated the 1DS RS for Canon, and that's what he told me. I don't do drugs , especially not when it concerns photography.

3 stops of light!! That would kill the deal for most sports shooters right there! Canon's previous pellicle mirrors only lost like 1/3 to 2/3 of a stop of light I believe. 3 stops is pretty crazy.

Wow, this thread disentegarted REEALLLY fast! Anyways,Yeah, I'm just wondering if this 'friend' works for Canon and how he got past all of the waivers that you have to sign to not talk about this sort of thing....

The new camera system uses a new shutter system, that stops down to achieve the 10fps. The 1v HS was released almost 7 years AFTER the 1n RS. Please get your facts right. :-)

If I may add, the FF cameras weren't really meant for sports were they? I presume Canon would still retain the 1D series. Who knows what they'll do there? At least now FF users can have the option of catching 10fps in good light. Couple that with high iso performance...you can imagine :-)

I really didn't appreciate the actions of the early posters. This thread isn't a joke, please don't treat it like one. I have nothing to gain to try to dissuade or lie to people.

Why 10fps with three stops of light loss? the 1DMKII could do 8fps already, why not use that motor on the FF camera, is it worth it 2 extra fps?

Honestly, I don't know. Perhaps Canon feels their pellicle technology has matured substantially since its film days, and it's ready for prime time. There's a lot more to fps than just the motor, I doubt you can just transplant it without significant re-engineering and achieve 8fps on a FF vs a 1.3x.

It's more of a good-to-have? I'd focus more on the elimination of viewfinder blackout when taking photos in the future. The new shutter system should be interesting too.

I'm not totally disbelieving the 1ds rs. There is one place where pellicle is appreciated: golf.

I agree there - even a 50/50 mirror only gives up a stop each way (50% light split). Interesting stuff, rumor or not. I know that they're working on some new stuff, but I have no idea what it is. Maybe this. Maybe not.
