p.1 #1 · Canon 20d and Grip

I bought this combo here in Canada and of course it freezes up from time to time. I called Canon in Calgary and they said a 2-4 week turn around once they receive it. They want my body and grip. Is this normal to send the body back as well. Thanks...

I've heard of the grip problem, where it would drain batteries almost instantly, but not a freezing problem.

I actually ran into a problem of my own today. I had two fully charged batteries inside the grip. Turned the body and grip's power on. Battery meter showed only halfway charged. Charged them both up again to be safe, and reinserted batteries again. Same problem. I crossed the batteries over opposite sides, swapping them. This fixed my problem. The OEM battery is in the first slot, and aftermarket in the second.

28,000 shots - the grip has been on since day one...never a problem. the 300D will do the wierd thing with the 2 different battery types I've discovered...but the worst complaint I have about the 20D's battery grip is that it never has felt as solidly connected as the 300D's

I have one of the first grips to be released and I've only had 2 lockups with my grip, and they where due to the grip comming loose. All I did was tighten up the grip and it worked fine. Never had a problem with the battery indicator.

Even though they will want the body. But you don't have to. they will perform the fix even if you didn't send in the body. I know someone did that in missisauga centre. I will not recommend giving them your camera, in case they lose it / screwed it up.

No, it is not normal to return the body with the grip. It is well documented and acknowledged by canon that the 20D grips have a problem that causes lock ups and battery drain messages. Canon will fix it by just returning the grip. I had to do it for my 20D when I had it. Just send your grip, not the camera.

I bought my grip about 3-4 months ago. I've never had a problem.
