p.1 #1 · Anyone still use a Canon 28-80L

Has anyone used this lens, it is right in the range that I am looking for, and the right price @ $650 on B & S right now. Unfortunately I have seen very little about it on the web.
Is it worth 650 or should I go for a brand new Sigma or Tokina for less $$
Thanks
for the input

I have not used this lens in awhile , but did use one a few years back for weddings. I thought it was really good and appreciated the 80mm long end which for me worked better than the 70mm long end on the lens I'm using for alot of wedding work these days. A couple of things to consider, the focus is plenty fast but the lens use the older system where there is no focusing when the camera is off the focus ring is fully electronic. Also there was a recall on the lens some years back to replace the "flare cut diaphram" this was done to address some light fall off issues but I don't recall the specifics. Overall optical quality was exceptional in fact I felt that is was superior to the 28-70mm which replaced it. I don't think you will be disappointed with it if you decide to proceed.

It's a very decent deal at 650, see if you can bargain a bit more to 625

The reviews of this lens have so far been outstanding. Check out Fredmiranda's own user reviews. http://www.fredmiranda.com/reviews/showproduct.php?product=151&cpage=1&perpage=15&cat=27#poststart

A good copy of the 24-70L is still sharper, but that lens is double the price and IMO suffers from more flare and CA at its 24mm wide end. This lens suffers much less variation in copy to copy performance than the 24-70

I started using this lens for wedding work on the full-frame 5D. It is too long (@28mm) for
1.6 crop DSLR's but works good on full-frame. Sharp lens wide open and the 80mm long
end is invaluable for portraiture. I don't have to switch lenses continuously like I do with
the 24-70L and 70-200L combo. 70mm does not jibe with me on full-frame. Note the lens
stays at F2.8 from 28-35mm then loses a third stop to F3.2 from 36-48mm then loses
another third to F3.5 from 49-65mm and loses the final third to F4.0 from 66-80mm. Also
this lens stays one length throughout the zoom range unlike the newer 28-70L or 24-70L.
However my 28-80L sat idle when I shot with D30, D60, 10D, 1D, 20D, 1D2 and only got
use when I shot film with my two Eos 3 (love those cameras). I will sell my 28-80L (~6 bills)
when I replace it with the revamped (non-flare) 24-105L (greater range + IS) before wedding
season 06.

it was one on ebay which didn't sell for $475. $650 is too much. with $50 more and a little bit of luck you can get a 28-70 2.8 which is fixable.
btw: the 28-80 lens is as heavy as the new 24-70 2.8 and a few mm longer

I owned this lens for about 10 year and it was my normal lens for all that time on EOS-1 & EOS-5. If it had not been stolen last year I would still be using it.

There was not a "recall" on this lens, however some copies did show a vignetting problem and Canon offered to replace the "flare cut diaphram" at no charge. I never had this problem with my lens and when I contacted Canon about returning my lens to have the new diaphram installed, I asked the tech. if installing it would effect lens quaility in anyother way. He said yes it would reduce the lens' contrast. When I told him I was not seeing a vignetting problem on my lens he said not all 28-80's had a problem and since I had no problem he recommended I not have new diaphram installed.

I have since used a 28-70L and now use a 24-70L. The quaility of the images from the 28-80 was equal to if not greater than either of the newer lenses. I think the focus in faster on the newer lense in low light situations.

From the ads I've seen, $600 ~ $650 seems to be the going price for a clean copy. KEH sometimes has this lens for sale and you can depend on their statement about condition of their products.
