as a new convert from C... to Nikon I wonder how to figure out a Nikon lens to be weather sealed?
C... mentions this clearly in prod.description for L lenses. Can´t find according info on Nikon website.
What I purchased and will purchase is:
80-200 2.8 D IF ED
17-35 2.8 IF ED
28-70 2.8 IF ED
Anyway, can´t put my gear in the car when it rains a little while a job has to be done. Anybody ever experienced lens damage while taking shots in bad wheather?
Well I hear garbage bags are usefull, however, it could just be that the tolerances on Nikon lenses are close enough to not need "weather seals", or it could just be that except for cheapo lenses all Nikon lenses have them. Its the kind of thing Nikon would just assume needed to be there and didn't bother making a marketing point about it.
I'll leave it for some of the sports pro's here to comment.
The 200-400VR does have a rubber seal around the lense mount , so does the 70-200VR , but i don't think any other newer non VR do .
But it never hurts to take extra protection in inclement conditions , i always take rubber bands and a few old bags along if i'm out in boats or quarrys where i do some shooting , a small hand towel is handy too .

Is it the AFS 80-200? If so, you have nothing to worry about, all three lenses are pro-tools and as such they are very well built optically as well as weather protction wise.
Nikon doesn´t have an equivalent of the Canon "L" branding on their pro lenses, but the price tag and maximum aperture will tell you wether it's a pro lens or not
Simple is best, GARBAGE BAGS are great protectors in the rain IF you remember to BRING the Rubber Bands. Without rubber bands bags don't mean much.
White Garbage Bags are for Canon
Black Garbage Bags are for NIKON
Clear may be used on Konica-Minolta, Pentax, and Olympus so folks may know they make a camera and lens.
Can anyone speak to how "weather sealed" the Nikon pro (expensive, fast) lenses that are not weather sealed are?
From my experience with Canon, any of the L lenses are pretty well sealed whether they claim to be or not (with one exception), but the non-L lenses are attrocious. I had a bag get submerged in a way where the L lenses were in water for a while but not the consumer lenses. When I pulled them out of the bag, the L lenses were dry and ready to shoot, but the rest almost wicked water from the wet bag. I never saw anything like that with my Nikon Ai and Ai-S lenses that were made before people realized that weather sealing was a good idea.

Thats does it..........
Is that why when I go to the store and look for the white kitchen garbage bags they always seem to so much more expensive.
The Black ones are a little less expensive and really seem to hold up alot better to the crap you put in it.
Well, I have been shooting under the worst possible conditions during monsoon from India to Vietnam, or dust storms in Pakistan and in Africa too, etc.
I NEVER experienced any problem with the following lenses :
20-35/2.8 AFD, 17-35/2.8 AFD, 80-200/2.8 AFS, 28/1,4 AFD, 85/1,4 AFD.
My 50 1,8 drowned once, but thats all for damage report.
NONE of my bodies ever stopped working accurately under very very heavy rain or dust storm. F90x, F100, F5, F6, D2H.
I dont talk about my D70, not at all buit for this kind of use... I never use it anyway...
Of course, I'm always careful when I work : back in the hotel room, I dry everyone and use plenty of little silicagel bags to dry even better.

Sorry, I was exaggerating. It's just that the lens is not as air tight as a rubber gasket on the mount might indicate. Since I bought it many particles have landed on the interior elements. I suppose it sucks in a lot of air when zooming.
