p.1 #1 · Interesting problem with TC-17E II

Hi all,

I received my brand new teleconverter today, but I have an interesting problem:

1. If the aperture ring is set at f2.8, the viewfinder is bright and the AF operates correctly. However, the metering does not (you can see "rEE" flashing in the viewfinder).

2. If the aperture ring is set at f22, the viewfinder is very dark and the AF does not operate at all. The metering operates, but the amount of light is (of course) very low (the shutter speed is about 100x normal).

The camera (Nikon D1X) and the lens (Nikkor AF-S 300mm f2.8D IF-ED) are operating correctly. However, I noticed that the aperture ring cannot be locked. No matter what is the position of the small switch, the aperture ring can be rotated.

What might be wrong? Have I missed something? The teleconverter is from the US, but this should not have any impact. Unfortunately I do not have any other Nikkors for testing ...

Fortunately the warranty of the lens is still valid, but there is only 2 weeks of vacation left. If the lens is broken, I will wait until the vacation ends. I can still shoot without the teleconverter.

that IS interesting. doesn't sound like anything to do with the teleconverter to me. can the aperture ring be locked without the teleconverter installed? if you push on the tab in the back of the lens to open your aperture, does it spring back when you let go?

p.1 #3 · Interesting problem with TC-17E II

I think I figured out what is wrong. I believe that the camera and the lens are operating correctl. Let me explain what is wrong:

All lenses are always locked to the minimum aperture (f22 in this case). However, the aperture is open wide by a small mechanical switch that you can see in the mount of the camera. Otherwise the viewfinder would be too drak and the AF system would not work.

The teleconverter also includes this switch. When I attach the teleconverter to the camera, the switch of the teleconverter is goes high as it should. However, when I attach the lens to the teleconverter, the switch of the lens stays down! As a consequence, the viewfinder is very dark and the AF system does not work. The reason is simple: The switch of the teleconverter is damn too short!

I believe this is some kind of compability problem. It is interesting that the Nikon repair service in Finland is not aware of the problem. I do not believe that the teleconverter would be broken. The teleconverter seems to be just fine. Does anyone know how to fix this issue?

Sounds like your new TC has a problem. I'd return it for another one.

I'm just wondering how you attached TC to lens and camera. I first mount TC to lens and then the combo to the camera. Try it if you haven't.

This might be a stupid response, because I don't know if there is any real difference, but nikonusa.com lists AF-S 300mm f/2.8D IF-ED II as the compatible 300mm lens for the tc17eII...

Could it be that your 300 isnt the "II" model and it matters somehow?

I doubt it, but I was suprised to see the list so specific.

I have Mark I, but the lenses that are not compatible are clearly listed in the manual. None of AF-S 300mm f2.8D IF-ED (Mark I, Marki II, or VR) are listed there. It seems that I need to visit Nikon's repair service on monday. I do not return the teleconverter, because it seems to be fine. I cannot find any kind of damages. Hopefully Nikon has a good explanation for this.
