p.1 #1 · Decision help?

I am desperated and really need your professional advices to making a gear change. I used to have a canon 20D and whole bunch of lenses. I have spent over $10,000 on equipts. I mainly do portraits but sometimes outdoor. After reading, reviewing, and one thing to another... I sold all my equipts to start all over again I have lost some of my investment . I am trying to move up to Canon 1DMII or 1DsMII just because its built-design or other pro. function. Now, I am reviewing again and think Nikon body is more attractive and cheaper than Canon. So if you can help to advice or convince me to switch to Nikon that would be greatly appreciative.

I am very familiar with Canon lenses but whole-new to Nikon. I meant which lens type will fit to what body.

Thanks for reading.

I would say stop whining about your gear and focus on your picture taking skills and work flow and you'll have great results. Tho I haven't tried Canon ever but am sure their system is equally capable of giving good results.

but if you switch to Nikon and start hanging around here in nikon forum, you'll never read anything which will make you think to switch gear..we simply believe in taking pictures

To put it simply Twister, all Nikor lenses will mount to and be useable on any of the current pro Nikon bodies. All except the earliest of the lot, those of which you wouldn't be buying anyway. These would be non-AI lenses made prior to 1977.

Here's a compatibility chart with a legend for the acronyms -
Nikon compatibility

That equates to a huge range of lenses available to a modern body. More than likely, unless you are looking to buy a lens at a pawn shop or specifically looking for one, you won't run into a pre 1977 non-AI. I can mount a 50mm off my FG (circa 83) on a modern body and use it in manual (theoritically, i've not actually done it as I have 2 other 50mm bought within the last decade and they are AF).

As for the rest of it, I am currently trying to help a friend whom just bought a 20D find some lenses and it sure is unfamiliar waters. What I don't understand is the rationale for moving away from a 20D. Were you not happy with the results? Are you looking for strictly a pro body? I am asking what it is you are looking for. That might help people direct you.

If you had not already sold your 20D and lenses I would have suggested you just stick with that.

What is it you need/want.

Thanks Qranc! I always looked at Nikon gear before buying Canon gear just because 20D had 8mb pixel and was about my budget. But after that I found 20D body is not really tough and sophisticated design like the D100 and not easy to take vertical shot. Now I would like to move toward the D2X which is 12mb pixel and under $5,000. I really like the pro body. So just help me to decide either buying Nikon D2X or Canon 1DMIIn?

I guess it's a moot point now, since you've sold all your Canon gear......it just blows my mind that after that much cash you would even think about switching If you were happy with the performance of the 20D, I would think the 1DMIIn would be a huge step up, performance and body wise.

Then again, there's always the D2X

Thanks Jacko! But still like Nikon body. How is your D2X? How long do you have it? Has it given you any problem?

If you weren't happy with a 20D for portraits and outdoors, you probably won't be any happier with Nikon, sad to say.

I got mine March 3, of this year. Never a problem FWIW, this seems like a time to wait to see what's coming out, e.g., the 5D might be a good option.

this is something you really need to decide for yourself. are you the type of person who will want to upgrade camera bodies every year or so? are you one of those people who absolutely have to have a "35mm" digital sensor? are you someone who needs more and more megapixels all the time? if so, canon sounds more like your flavor. having said that, nikon makes some superb gear.

You drop 10K on Canon body and lenses, and you sold them all? Wow...
