p.1 #1 · 70-200 VR in stock?

I plan on ordering one of these next week--just waiting for a check to clear--but have not been able to find one in stock. Ritz does have them, but at a price almost $200 above anyone else's. I've tried B&H, Calumet, Sammy's... everyone I could think of.

Appreciate any help--Timm

Thanks for the help, William, but I've had experiences with Adorama... unpleasant ones.

Thanks, John. I can't for the life of me find the lenses on that page... do retailers realize that we come to their webpages to buy things?

Still looking....

I noticed they don't have ANY lenses on their site. Try calling..it's a 1-800 number, so it's free.

Oh yeah, phone... and actually talk to some one... how quaint!

Thanks again, John. Let's hope it's still in stock Tuesday!

I spent an hour on Google chasing this lens around, and it seems the only places that stil have it in stock KNOW that they are the only places that still have it in stock--prices approaching $1800!

Damn Nikon USA! I've been lusting after this glass since it came out. I finally saved the pennies to get one, and it's OUT OF STOCK!!! And it looks to be a supply-side problem.

Timm,

It must be a sellers market right now. On e-Bay a used one is at $1375 with a day left. A grey market new one is asking more than a USA minus rebate. It might be best to be to sit back a while until someone reputable gets one in stock. I'm sure Kendrick won't mine loaning his out for the rest of the year.

I've heard only good things about KEH, and I think I'll be doing some business with them Tuesday if the lens is still availible! Not to mention all the other great lenses there... I really should reserve cruising that list for times when I'm broke and can only dream--because now I'll be broke again very soon.

Alan, this lens is just too techie and pricey to contemplate buying used from someone I don't know. Unless I can find an absolute killer deal--like half new--I'd rather have a Nikon USA and full warranty. And unfortunately, K is taking off in a week or so for most of the winter... makes talking him into buying a bunch of fine Nikkor a little less useful.

I bought mine from www.onecall.com. Their website is down right now so I'm not sure if it's in stock. Try checking tomorrow.

It's available at J&R new for $1600 minus the $150 rebate. It looks like it's in stock.

Thanks, Folks!

Just placed my order from KEH. $1650, before rebate.

Samy's camera also had one, but I had to e-mail to find out if it was in stock, and then was given a price of $1615 "minus rebate", like the price from J&R above.

What's "minus rebate"? My assumption is that this means "after rebate". I may be wrong, but when sales people use terms that are less than chrystal clear.....

Thanks again for the help--

Timm (waiting....)

"minus rebate" would seem to be "before rebate"... in other words, your price will be $1600 "minus the amount of the rebate" or a total of $1450.

Thanks again, folks. The lens at KEH was out-of-stock, regardless of the fact that their site still lists it as in stock. Bummer.

So it's back to the search.

Let's see if I can find that J&R....

Berry's Camera Shop in Lafayette IN has one in stock listed for $1699 (at least this AM) - great family run business (765) 742-0297
You might also try Roberts of Indianapolis - good service.

Sigh... I broke down and bought a 105 Micro-Nikkor from KEH, a lens I need as badly as the 70-200. Consequently, I don't have the $$ for the VR right now, and, of course, when I got home from work yesterday, there was a message from KEH saying that a computer glitch was responsible for my being told the lens was out of stock when it was actually in stock, and I could re-new my order and they'd waive the difference between 2nd day and next day air shipping!

AAARGH!!!!

Well hopefully it'll be there next friday when I get paid; assuming that none of you good folks beat me to it ( I know the thought would never cross your minds)--

Timm

the 70-200 is IMO a much better lens than the 105 . If you get a 500D for it you have nearly a macro lens . Not flat field but gorgeous bokeh

but of course the litle macro is light for you hiking tho

Mornin', J.

Well, I have lots of product work for local artists lined up for the winter, so I think I'll be putting the 105 to good use. You may remember that I almost bought one a while back, and I loved shooting with it--that one was a beater, and the guy wanted too much for it. As you note, it's a great little lens for hiking.

I just got an order for three 10 X 40ish panos, and another for a bunch of prints from the last wedding I shot, so I may just end up with both!

(Man, I hate changing the 2200 over to roll paper! I end up frustrated as all hell every time! I managed to ruin the first foot or so of the roll this time.)

I've had the opportunity to use the 70-200 with the 500D, and you're right, it's a killer combo! But sometimes the ability of a macro lens to focus to infinty without removing anything is essential... I recall shooting some butterflies in a canyon a couple of years ago, using extention tubes and a 80-200, when a Golden Eagle came up over the rim of the canyon and hung on the wind ten feet from me--I dropped the x-tubes in my rush, but still missed the shot.

Timm (with fingers crossed)
