p.1 #1 · Help me buy 17-55

So I'm considering the 17-55 DX to replace my 18-70 because it's apparently a brilliant lens (and my 18-70 isn't).

A recent thread showed many people to rate the 17-55 as their favourite lens, so that's encouraging.

Because this is mail order and because of the shenanigans whan I got my 12-24 (I eventually settled for the 3rd copy) I'm considering asking the dealer to shoot a couple of shots and email me the results before I stump up the sponduliks.

Are there any issues I should look out for before I spend my month's salary? (Apart from making sure my kids have enough to eat) (What, they're not mine? Excellent! )

Of course I'm hoping to get a lot of replies saying "just get one" but the exceptions to the rule can prove very illuminating.
Thanks for any advice!

Chris,

17-55 is a superb lens. Sharp all across the frame and colours are just superb. Please feel free to have a look at some of the shots I took during my trip to Las Vagas.

Best wishes,

Doubt if you'll get any dealer to do what you want in the UK ,
best bet is to take your camera into the shop and shoot in different lighting and focal lengths /f stops etc .
I went down to Parkescameras in Burgess Hill used their moniter and shot a few test shots before i bought mine .

Before you spend a month's salary, you might want to check if you got a bad 18-70. You just might want to read this thread

I love mine, great, fabulous... blah blah blah,

But my kids have enough to eat, and ice cream!

Peyman - thanks for the great pics!

ChrisSE - thanks for the vote of confidence

chemprof - thanks for the link. The rave reviews about the 18-70 helped me go for the D70 kit in the first place. I did send the lens in for investigation and Nikon sent it back saying there's nothing wrong with it. Nothing like that kind of exercise to recalibrate one's world-view!!! Another I tried at the shop produced similar images. Sometimes it's sharp and produces great pictures, sometimes it's pretty bad (leaving aside my bad photography ).
Anyway, it suffices, but now I'm looking for something altogether better.

travelingman - are you telepathic or what. I just got an email back from my dealer of choice (no names just yet in case they relent) saying no dice because trying out a new lens would mark the pins. Huh? Maybe I scared them off by trying out 3 12-24s and they don't want my custom again. What's more likely is I just got the pat answer and I need to phone them and talk to the person there who is actually allowed to make decisions. I've had three lenses from them so logic dictates that there must be *some* kind of loyalty-relationship thing growing? Wouldn't you think?

I considered this lens too. At the time - 2 months ago, it was too expensive for me to consider, so I ended up with a 35-70 cause I already had an 18-35. So If I was you - I would JUST GET IT!

I also want a 12-24, but just don't have extra cash right now.

Not telepathic Chris , just realistic .
Not many large dealers would have the time and smaller dealers would'nt carry the 17-55 , but order it in .
I doubt if it's the fact that you're a pain in the neck
It's proberbly because they have'nt the time or inclanation to take pictures , not knowing what kind of shot you're looking for .
you need to find one with one in stock where you can just go in and try , Where abouts are you in the U.K.

Far away from Burgess Hill, ah happy days... I used to live down the line in Littlehampton, from where a Saturday trip into London would have sufficed. These days I live in Edinburgh, which is a great city but not always convenient for those specialist consumer items...
Of course there's a Jessops in town but they want 20% over the real price and would have to order one in anyway.

yes, there are advantages to livnig in major metropolis area's - for me that's Toronto - where we have countless camera stores looking for business, and you can quite often get one or the other to drop price on an item.

This is my latest "always attached" lens. The only drawback is the size and weight. If you don't worry about those things, get it!
