Hi all just looking for some info on the D1. Sold my D70s and I am now looking at a replacment for less money. I can get a used D1 for 550. CND local. Its from a dealer who has 5-6 unit with between 30k and 60k frame count. Pic of the lot for that price maybe a little better for Cash. What should I be looking for Thanks John K

If I could only have one or the other, I'd probably take the D1 just for the solid feel. One thing to be aware of is to have spare batteries. As has been said, the D1 (also the D1x) is power hungry. As far as the color and performance issues, here is A GALLERY OF D1 IMAGES from a couple of years ago. I was/am pleased with the results.

Good luck.

no not henrys, photocreative is the dealer. needed some cash real quick so I sold the D70s. I was trading a film body to them also so it was going to cost me about 400CND taxes in with the charger. I know its older tech in the D1 but cost is the factor right now. If i could get a D50 for that I would buy it. Thanks john

Other things about the D1: You will have to convert the colour space of each image to sRGB, as it uses the old RGB 1998 format. Some people complain about a magenta cast, and its cause of the old colour format that this occurs.

Not true. There is nothing 'old' about the Adobe RGB 1998 colour space. The correct colour space depends ENTIRELY upon the intended use of the image. sRGB is a better colour space for images intended for display on the web (on a monitor), whereas RGB 1998 is better suited for printing. Check out these links for detailed explanation of what the two colour spaces actually represent.

I still use my D1 regularly under daylight or strobe conditions and always shoot in the Adobe RGB 1998 colour space with no need to convert to sRGB later.

Further, the magenta cast has ZERO to do with colour space. The magenta cast was an issue with early versions of the camera sensor itself. It was corrected with later generations of the original D1.
