And the point is....

Are most of the guys here buying a new camera because it is a new model or is it really because you actually need the new features.

It would be unwise of Canon to release a new FF D-SLR at this point. What's the point in having SLR sales canceling each other out. The 1Ds Mk II itself could use improvement before they release something to replace it or even come close to it with fewer features than what's already available.

The 1 series remains the pro line and that will not change. This has been the same since the EOS line began and both Canon's 1 series and Nikon's "F" series have stayed true to their pro line. The 20D fills up the spot that the EOS 3 had in the film SLR line. The Digital Rebel has the same spot as the film Rebel. Why would canon want to change things now when everything is going so well and all they have to offer is a substandard (although more Megapixel) replacement for the 20D.

It's always nice to speculate. But you gotta be smoking some really good stuff to think that saturating the market with so many different models will get your sales up that much.

It won't be cancelling anything out. There's still a $4,500 gap between the two cameras. If anything, they just blew the price point. I can see a few people going for the 5D simply because it's FF, but most people I know who are serious about their cameras agree that if given the choice between an FF 20D for $3,500 and the 1.3 crop factor 1D MKII for the same price, the clear choice is the 1D.

Again, if this camera was $2,500, it would be a no brainer for me. But if it's $3,500... no thanks.

I think Canon wants to sell as many cameras as they can. They will sell a lot more FF cameras at $3500 than $8000. I can't even begin to entertain the idea of an $8K camera. But at $3500, I'm at the teetering point. Brand new camera(with warranty) with better noise capabilities than the 1dsm1. Call me crazy, but that sounds pretty good to me.

It depends on what you're going for. After owning pretty everything except the 1DsMkII, I can say pretty definitively that I can make higher quality large prints with the 1Ds than the 1DMkII. I expect the same to be true of the 5D. Many people will choose the extra enlargeability over camera niceness for the same reason people choose to work with medium and large format. And lets face it - the 20D is pretty nice. I can think of worse things to use than a full-frame 20D.

Just curious... Ive noticed these images popping up in threads on other boards, but y'all have TWENTY SEVEN pages - Lol.

Has this "5D" with an FF sensor been authenticated yet, or is it still simply a rumor?

Do you not like the current 70-200/2.8 IS or are you looking for an f/4?

A google search produced only Asian web pages for me. One was a .pdf file. I downloaded it and as far as I can tell, it looks legit.

Hey, all. Having a vacation in Japan right now and saw a poster up in Yodobashi Camera (roughly Best Buy equivalent) which I'm pretty sure was for the EOS 5D. If this is still an unresolved dispute, I'll try to get a shot of it today and post here so we have some evidence that wasn't made up in modeling software. I'll try to get the shot up later this evening.

Sounds like a perfect upgrade to my Rebel XT. A 60+% jump in effective pixels is impressive, and the full-frame sensor makes my 17-40 a 17-40 again! Glad I didn't buy that 10-20mm zoom last week. Close call!

I think this is it guys - look at the detail like the indentation around the buttons on the right side, the 1 series-esque profile of the prism, the subtly different area around the lens mount - close to the 1V but a little different, the grip with its indentation deeper than the 20D but not so deep as the 1V or 1D.

I have no doubt that this is authentic.

This is not a 20D.....its a rendering of the D60! the "indentation" and buttons on back is just like my D60.

Great a FF sensor without the expanded neck breaking grip, wish is it was 5 FPS but I can live with 3, 9 focus points are ok. It's time to start looking to unload the 10D to a relative.

What's nice is they are releasing a 24-105 L IS F4 lens oh ya, Santa is going to be busy this year.

Spoke with a dealer and was told that Canon is releasing two new bodies and a flash in the next couple of months. One of the bodies would be a new 1 series and the other was similar to the 20D. Did not have details on the bodies, but knew that they were coming. Also told me that the usual trend with Canon is they stop getting SLR bodies out to dealers about 3-4 months in advance if there is a replacement on the way. He told me that has not happened in this case yet. Take it for what it's worth, but he was right in the past about the 20D and Rebel XT.

Whatever the new body turns out to be, I will be due for my next upgrade in a couple of years and intend to buy to for $500 or less from the FM Buy & Sell forum

this may just be my bad spanish showing but isnt a bateria a drum kit? i find it strange that this new camera comes complete with drums!!!! i would definately be interested if true as i make large prints but imo an upgrade to the 1d2 makes more sense. a 13mp 8fps 1d3 or whatever would more effectively kill the d2x than this.lets hope it is true and its cheap. to go back a few pages to discussions of the 10-22, why would anyone with a non weather sealed body consider a weather sealed lens a priority? nice yes but a bit pointless

Sorry but aside from fact that the D60 is also smaller then the 5D, the back looks nothing like it in side by side comparison.

ok I just went through all 28 pages and it took me 45mins to read everyone's comments!

Here is my 2-cents.

It doesn't make sense to me that they would make this 5D because I think it
would kill the 1Ds Mark II

I only shoot weddings and do a little portrait and fashion work. I want a FF for portrait and fashion with something over 10mp. FF and anything over 10mp has been my dream but was only in the flagship 1Ds, but if they make this camera then I won't have to save for the 1Ds anymore and I can just buy this.

I know I'll get flamed but thats what I think... there should be something that fills the 1d and 20d gap but I think this is a bit too good to fill the gap.

I don't really think the 1Ds MkII has anything to worry about or the 1D MkII for that matter. These are pro bodies the 10, 20, 5D are pro-sumer bodies, the difference is lightyears between them.

I think this 5D (if it is for real) would be a hobby landscape shooters dream. I moved from a 10D to the 1D MkII for landscape shooting 1.For smaller crop factor and 2. Higher MP. I wanted the pro body but could not afford the full frame 1Ds MkII, the 1D MkII was my comprimise. If I had heard about the possibility of this 5D sooner I probably would have waited to see if it was really true.

Also something like the 5D (assuming it's real and the specs are accurate) should probably be seen in the context of the next generation of Canon dSLR's, where no doubt the 'standard' megapixel bar will be raised substantially higher all round.

There's always that leap frogging, when newer lower end products are released and compared against older higher end gear. Cool if you're buying the newer, semi weird if you own the older.

I'll be interested to see what effects any cost cutting in the 5D has on the cameras performance in the real world. I don't know how forgiving full frame will be if anything else in the camera that is lacking.

It'll be a shame if Canon drops 1.3 - ideal imo, just needs a few more MP.

More megapixels is nice, but a smaller pixel pitch is not. I live well with my own 1D II and 20D, but if I want substantially more pixel resolution I realistically understand that a larger sensor is required in order to maintain dynamic range and a good S/N ratio.
