What about getting the Tokina 19-35 F3.5-4.5 (AKA the plastic fantastic) instead? Less overlap with the 28-135 and a cracking lens for the money ($150 after $20 rebate, so effectively only $50 more than getting the kit lens)
Both. My copy of the kit lens was great and it is nice and wide. The 50 is awesome but it doesn't focus close enough for me and the darn thing is stuck and 50mm!!
The 50/1.8 is not a good choice for a single-lens solution on a 1.6x crop camera. If you're only getting one lens, get the kit lens. It's not nearly as bad as it's made out to be. In fact, it's quite good considering the price.
If you can afford both, get both. The 50/1.8 makes a nice short telephoto on a 1.6x body -- great for portraits.
Don't get the kit lens. It depreciates in value faster than any other canon lens, simply because there are SO MANY out there. You already have the 28-135. You don't even need to get the 50, though I think its a great thing to get just so you can experience a wide aperture, and become addicted to it.
I got he 350D with the kit lens and the 50mm f/1.8. Then I sold the kit lens without even using it...thinking it was crap. Now I have the kit lens again, and love it. Yes it is a consumer lens, but for the value I traded it for, it is awesome! I was amazed at how wide 18mm is! I had been using the 135, 50, and 75-300! I started laughing so much the first few times I used it.
The kit lens is by no means an "L" but I wouldn't call it crap (Not saying this just because I have it ). It is decent and I say go for it and get the 50mm later if you have to. If you want the kit lens later you won't be able to get it and you would have to buy it used.
Edit: I just remembered that some places sell the kit lens separately now but for a premium.
The standard question still hasn't been asked - what are you planning on shooting? If you're planning on doing low light stuff then there's no question, you need the wider aperature of the 50.
I shot a band at a bar over the weekend and couldn't have pulled it off without my 50 - there was another photog there using a DReb (300 or 350, I dunno) with the kit lens and there is a significant difference between his pics and mine...

D60 ISO1000 f1.8 + lots of PS
Got to get both. You'll be seriously limited by having only that 50/1.8. And the kit lens is the only way to get true wide angle at a decent price. Definitely get both and add in the 28/2.8 and 85/1.8 when you can.

50/1.8. But if you can stretch a bit... then 35 f/2 would make a great indoor lens. I had a 50/1.8 and personally found it a bit long for shooting in my small room and so I sent it back and got a 35 f/2! I loved 50/1.4 too...
