Richard,
Thanks for the kind words. This was a planned shot in a chance location. My daughter was invited to a birthday party at a gymnastics studio. I had my camera with me to shoot the party but also had my eye open for an object to use for the weekly assignment. The netting in the photo surrounded the trampoline. As the kids were bouncing on the trampoline I wondered if I could focus through the net and get a picture of them in mid air. The answer was yes, but it was tricky. On one shot, I accidentally focused on the net and noticed the really cool effect created by a shallow DOF on the background. I couldn't recall ever seeing a photo like this before (although I'm sure it's been done) so I decided it would be a neat concept to use for the weekly assignment.
At this point I started to set up the shot. I positioned myself so that I could capture the subjects in the background (waiting their turn on the trampoline) by climbing on top of a conveniently located vaulting horse. I took a number of shots seeking to get the contours of the net to line up with the heads and shoulders of the subjects. This was actually very difficult and is probably the element of the photo of which I am most proud. I then varied aperture to get the DOF I was after. All in all I took about 20 shots to get the one I have posted. I did a crop, resize and slight USM.
Tzuen,
Thanks. I used my 135mm f/2 which has really nice bokeh and it was key to getting this shot to work.
Carolina,
Thanks. To be totally honest, I really did not considered the symbolism when I took the photo (I was obsessed with getting the net lines to flow around the subjects). I was primarily "focused" an making a nice image. Now that you have brought it to my attention I can see many different interpretations of this photo. I'd be interested in learning what others think.
