p.1 #1 · Nikon Software crash with SP2 and AMD-64bit

If this is a double post, or old news,…Daschund can remove or unstick the thread. It gives me big trouble on my new system.

Nikon Capture 4.x and probably Nikon View 6.x also, will not work on an AMD-64bit system and Windows XP SP2 installed. The computer will crash (blue screen and reboots)

On other systems you can try to disable the 'Data Execution Protection' . It will not work with the above configuration, because the problem is partly caused by AMD’s 64-bit processor.

All the best,

Hendrik

Update :

This is an temporarily solution (disabling ‘No Execute’ feature). I recommend changing back to the default after Nikon released a working update.

Go to the control panel (classic view) double click ‘System’.

Choose ‘Advanced’ tab, In the ‘Startup and Recovery’ section click the ‘settings’ button.

Then click ‘Edit’ button in system startup.

This will open Notepad and will open your BOOT.INI file. At the end of the file you will see /NoExecute=OptOut.

Change ‘OptOut’ to ‘AlwaysOff’. Close Notepad and save (click yes and ok).

After reboot Nikon Capture 4 should work without any problems.

Yeah I reported this to several people including Nikon and Microsoft I was a beta tester of SP2 and what's interesting is that RC1 didn't have this problem. So something they changed between RC1 and RC2 (when it first popped up) changed.

Best,
James

Not a Nikon issue I am affraid I think this is going to be a SP2 fix because more then Nikon software is bugged by this problem. It's a issue with MS and AMD.

Best,
James

Damn MS! I got the dreaded BSOD from the new DEP. I was going to fix it according to the above article, but instead removed it through safe-mode. It wouldn't be worth it if Capture didn't work.

I also have an AMD-64 based system.

I removed the entire service pack via add/remove programs. I'd like to wait and here from someone who has gotten it to work before I try again.

Any idea if there is a conflict with non "64" AMD processors?

It is, but not all the time. Disabling the 'Data Execution Protection' should work on those machines.

Here are two links that may prove helpful, regarding Windows XP SP2:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/winxppro/maintain/sp2chngs.mspx

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;811113

The second link makes for "good" reading

The new released Nikon Capture 4.1.3 still has the same problems. So save yourself the time and skip this update. :worried:

I really think Nikon gives very bad service this time. A problem of this magnitude should be solved within a week.

I must confess...the dark side is strong...

Hmm... I really don't think this is a Nikon issue. I have SP2 and all of my Nikon Software working fine on my Intel box. That said my Laptop runing an AMD chip is getting killed by SP2 so it was uninstalled.

Best,
James

No. it's the combination of SP2, AMD-64-bit and Nikon Software. The one who should solve the problem is Nikon IMO

I can back this up. I have an Intel chip[2.8 ghz] and SP2 installed
and all my Nikon software[capture 4.1.3 and view 6.2.2] works fine.
