The traditional open th box and shoot anything regardless of how stupid it is. I believe most of these were at 1.4. I borrowed my neighbors D600 since my D4 is out till tomorrow.
All I can say, it's amazing! I have owned the Noctilux, and all sorts of exotic glass. This Otus is the KING of bokeh!

Looks great, bokeh, sharpness and everything looks great! I would soooo love to have that lens but kind of out of my prize range now as well, that and I no longer have FF

Jorge,
Congrats on being one of the first ones to test this lens. Thanks for the samples.
When you get some time, post your impressions on the reviews page.

Nice lens, there is some fringing on the spoon as soon as it goes out of focus, but I am nit picking. All wide open 1.4 lenses have it. I would like to see comparisons with the sony ZA lenses. A mount 50 1.4 ($1500) and E mount 55 1.8 ($1000).

Looks really good. Reminds me of the 50 Lux ASPH, but at these distances, it looks sharper in the plane of focus.
As for being king of bokeh... one person's King is another's Joker.
It's good to have choices, and there certainly are a lot at ~50mm!
Gary, I believe the offical Zeiss Flickr site has a lot of mid and longer distance scenes at or near wide open. IIRC, definitely some double-edged nervousness in certain kinds of background details...

Better bokeh samplea can be found at lenstip website.
Link to that was slready posted in the other "original" otus 55 thread. You know, the one which has been going on for awhile which jorge could have posted in but can not resist starting his own thread.SOS.
Ron, take a look at the bokeh in the bokehvtorture image of the model with black and white check jacket and same background wall and tell me you think the bokeh is not excellent.

Jorge, these samples are all nice and good but how well does it render nude models?
Well, if I did that and the wife found out, this would the become the Otus Colonscope. I like the lens on the camera and no where else. So lets leave that one up to another photographer to decide.

Hi Wayne - thanks for the reminder. Been caught up in the a7 discussions and the Otus thread fell off my radar. Also not planning to buy it...
I definitely think the Otus looks great. Best in class sharpness, seems like zero fringing/CA as well. And very smooth background blur shown here. I have noticed that at somewhat farther distances, when there isn't much subject/background separation that there is tendency towards double edged out of focus details. For example:
Take a look at the blue street sign "Plaza Nueva/Plaza Barria" and other edges, such as the steps, other signs on the wall, wires, window frames, etc. You can see it in some of their other images too. Seems to be a consequence of the lens's divergent sagittal and tangential plot lines towards the image circle edges. But then, this kind of subject/background separation is challenging. From my experience with the 50 Lux ASPH, just looking at some images at similar subject distance and background separation, and it's a lot busier/messier in the outer zone than the Otus.
Just part of the process of getting to know how a given lens works in various situations...

Yes, I think we agree that it is not always perfect as there are sometimes a slight nervousness in the corners but overall compared to other top 50's is excellent . Combined with the excellent contrast and sharpness wide open with little to none CA and coma, this lens sets the bar higher.
