"Another great feature of this discovery is the raw histogram which will let you actually see if anything is under- or overexposed in raw and not just in jpeg like with the vanilla Canon fw. [or by trying to use nasty profiles that make it hard to review photos]"

So more awesome news along with the new incredible video modes unlocked. These new video modes show Canon gave us some pretty incredible video hardware to say the least, truly stunning .

(What the heck is Canon doing letting themselves be utterly taken over by their marketing drones.
They were light years ahead in all tech other low ISO DR and even when they fell behind the latter they still didn't try to take advantage of the stuff they were way ahead on.)

Do you just complain about Canon all the time?

You do have other options.

Exciting times. They gave us the hardware and now with the hacks exciting times indeed.

Canon has only 1 Software Engineer for the whole EOS line. They're still using PROLOG .

Wow, a RAW histogram would be soooo nice to have. I hope they can implement that on older hardware, too!

I don't think you understood the message very well. This thing will utterly annihilate the Nikons for video now. And we should be getting RAW historgrams soon on the 5D3 (and likely almost all sub-1 series bodies).

The 5D3 hardware was vastly superior to the Nikon hardware all along (in terms of video, live view and 24fps low and medium res stills capture (not for low ISO high MP still)) it was just locked and hidden away.

I'm apparently lost. Are we talking normal 5D3 firmware or some magic lantern beta or what?

Edit - nevermind, I should read the first page of FM more often and quit skipping to the forums.

ML pre-alpha

(tangent here but look what it does for video dynamic range :
First with regular firmware:

Now with ML firmware!:

Will any of these software/firmware updates make it to the 5D2?

Or is the 5D2 hardware obsolete to take advantage of these enhancements?

I am just a photo shooter, but how do you swap the "out of the box JPEG" histogram with this RAW one you speak of?

Correct me if I am wrong, but it seems to me that the big difference between the two more a matter of the difference in "exposure"? What I am trying to say is the highlight of the second clip does indeed look better but the shadow part was darker at the same time, too. I am not trying to downplay the difference here but is DR difference really that big?

He said that shot both using the same ISO/shutter/aperture. The interior walls do look darker but it was probably just a different tone curve that he applied to the RAW stuff. Maybe it's not a perfect comparison but I don't think you could make the one shot with the regular firmware ever pull teh clouds back like that without having the interior go to mush and noise.

There would be an option in the Magic Lantern Menu. It might be at least another month or two before they get public releases out that you don't have to compile yourself.

Wow. We have an amazing camera. Can't believe Canon has hidden away the continuous RAW video output. Now I really have to hide my camera away so my Hollywood neighbors isnt so tempted to borrow it.

it sounds like the raw histogram should make it to the 5D2

it sounds like some of the video stuff will but it's hard to say, maybe it would need to be a bit lower resolution or still have lots of moire edit: just saw some demos, it does the better DR (although not as much of a help as on the 5D3) and it does have lots of aliasing and moire and it seems to drop frames a lot; I don't think the 5D2 sensor is powerful enough to ever be able to match what the 5D3 does for video. I could be wrong but I really doubt it.

Actually there is a shred of truth to this, the whole reason it is hackable in the first place is because Canon uses DATALIGHT ROM-DOS which is an embedded hack of microsoft's MS-DOS, the predominant PC operating system from the 80's and 90's (pre-windows).

http://www.datalight.com/products/rom-dos

So really it's at least based on something that is quite dated in the computing world.

What is wrong with the histogram in RAW mode now? Canon histograms have been fine for years other than the lack of right border.
