With regard to setting the personal functions, hook of the camera to the computer via the firewire cable (not the USB). Turn on the camera.
Open EVU. On the pull down Option menu, select Camera Settings. Within
that choice, you will find the Personal Functions.

Yes, you need a FW card (or a Mac =)). The USB port on the 1D2 is only for direct printing. The FW port is for everything else - camera settings, tethered usage, and image download.
It is ridiculous that the 1Dx series does not allow setting of the PF values on the body. It was understandable in the days of EOS 1v, but not an excuse by the time the 1D MKII was introduced.
It would work, but you don't need Firewire 800 (1394b) for the 1D MKII. It might be useful for external drives. Any $20 Firewire card will do. Doesn't your computer have a 1394a port, or is it an older model?

With the 1Ds, I had problems with it being unrecognized about 30% of the time.
Gunny, you might want to check and see if your MB offers support for firewire. If so, you can just add a front input(easy if you have an open drive bay) and connect to the MB.

NO, you should not use a Firewire 800 card. The Firewire 800 spec is not backwards compatible to Firewire 400, which is what the Canon pro bodies use. Just get a cheap (~$30) standard firewire card.

No, it should be compatible if the FireWire HBA supports both, which almost all do. However, the correct cable or adapter (9 pin to 6 pin or 9 pin to 4 pin) must be used. I run a mixed system with no problems.

This is not true at all. The FW 800 spec is very well fully backwards compatible to FW 400. You are confusing compatibility with identical plugs. If you have an adapter cable/plug, you can connect a FW400 device to a FW800 port and vice versa. Of course in that case the speed will be only FW400.
The bigger problem is getting the adapter cable / plug. And that may not be worth the hassle.

Went to CompUSA & got one of their $30 Firewire cards for my desktop..
works great. Comes with an additional cable.
Got one of the PCMCIA versions for my Dell laptop, and although it
'sees' the camera, it can't connect. Does work on other laptops tho,
so it's gotta be a Dell issue.
PSCS works pretty well in acquiring images, but can't seem to do
RAW. Like somebody else said.. don't think the driver is quite ready
for prime time.
It does xfer the files pretty fast... maybe as fast as my reader with the
1g microdrive.
