Seems like a dumb question, so I'll have to ask it.
Where do you put your lens cap when shooting?
I tend to slip them in a pants pocket, but sometimes my pockets have lint.
I've been known to leave scraps of paper in the pockets during laundry.
I don't like tethers, with the caps bouncing around. If I have a bag with me, I'll try to put the cap there.
But it's not consistent, so I hunt around for it. If I had a standard lint-free location, it would simplify my work flow.
I never use the front caps as they just always seem to get in the way. I've never had an issue by not using them. I always use the back cap though as I store lenses front side down in my bag usually with a crumpled up lens cloth at the bottom of each slot in the bag as a bit of cushion.
1. In my camera bag - most of the time
2. Pocket in my jacket or sometimes my jeans when not using a jacket
3. Top of my bag (seldom)
4. On the table close to my bag - sometimes when shooting indoor
5. in the back seat of my car
Never use 'em. Hoods stay mounted ready to fire, stored in their own bag/pelican facing down...
or lens mounted to a body in it's own bag. Cameras never turned off either, when I Iift one out I'm
ready to shoot. While you're fumblin' around, I've already got the shot. Just sayin'
(in 45 years...zero (0) scratched front elements)
Front right pocket - it's so automatic that a couple of years ago I was driving along a road and saw something that caused me to slam on the brakes, jump out of the truck, grab the camera and shoot, all in about 5 seconds. Afterwards I spent a good 2-3 minutes looking for the lens cap, knowing that there was no way I could have pulled it and put in my pocket. Finally, after giving up on the cap I went home and when I got there went to change clothes and found the cap in my right front pocket.
Sorry gentlemen, I've got you all beat. When lacking anyplace else to put a lens cap, i.e. pocket, vest, bag, I'll resort to slipping it down my shirt into my bra. Never lost one yet that way

When I buy a new lens, I install a hood and put the lens cap in a shoebox for safe keeping. When I sell the lens it has a shinny new lens cap for somebody else to save in a shoebox.

I store them in various places- front and rear pants pocket, jacket pockets, and camera bag, which can make the item diffcult to locate when I need to replace the cap. It also contributes to the lint on my lenses, but the protection they afford is more important. I once saw a product many years ago that was a "flip-up" cap- it screwed into the lens, and with a built-in release, the cap would flip up via a hinge. Yes, it probably would be regarded as too nerdy for many photographers, but it would seem to be convenient. If you are frequently using screw-in filters, or lens hoods, that would be inconvenient.
