Glad you like this, Morris.
The key to the train excursion from Durango to Silverton is to take the one with the STEAM locomotive. And sit in the back car so you can see and photograph the locomotive on the many curves the track takes.

Thanks, Nara.
I drove to Silverton on this trip. As the road dropped down to come into town, I parked by the river, walked down the tracks and waited for the train to arrive. Yes, I was on the river bank.
I had been following the steamer since it left Durango.

the hike in is much nicer... but well shot!
Thanks.
Hiking is always good, although I was disgruntled whenever I sweated blood hiking to a good place and had to share it with folks who DROVE there .

the hike along the Animas is amazing. Took a group into Chicago Basin for a few days of heaven.. then when we came out and hiked back toward Durango Mountain (trailhead), we were gonna overnight at Cascade wye, where the train makes a stop. I lagged behind to catch some shots of the train passing over the bridge there, and one of my group ran up to me breathless... "Did you bring your pistol?" "No, I didn't want the weight".... he replied, "there's a bear IN camp".. I hoofed it over and sure enough, a black bear with a taste for backpacks was on the prowl. We gather up, stuck some packs int eh trees, and it climbed and grabbed MINE! A barrage of rocks and epithets coaxed it down and away, but it was constantly circling, so we high-tailed it without rest for the trialhead in the dark... that was a nearly 20 mile day!
