the hike along the Animas is amazing. Took a group into Chicago Basin for a few days of heaven.. then when we came out and hiked back toward Durango Mountain (trailhead), we were gonna overnight at Cascade wye, where the train makes a stop. I lagged behind to catch some shots of the train passing over the bridge there, and one of my group ran up to me breathless... "Did you bring your pistol?" "No, I didn't want the weight".... he replied, "there's a bear IN camp".. I hoofed it over and sure enough, a black bear with a taste for backpacks was on the prowl. We gather up, stuck some packs int eh trees, and it climbed and grabbed MINE! A barrage of rocks and epithets coaxed it down and away, but it was constantly circling, so we high-tailed it without rest for the trialhead in the dark... that was a nearly 20 mile day!
