p.1 #1 · Ultimate Zeiss lens for Nikon?

If one could pick one, and only one, Zeiss lens that epitomises ‘The Zeiss look’, for want of better terminology which lens would you choose?
Caveats:
1. Nikon mount
2. Current production item
3. "Under most conditions" - rather than specific areas where otherwise a 'common or garden' Nikon lens might be indistinguishable from the Zeiss.
Rather the cliché that 'this is as good as it gets' for a Zeiss lens?
Assume that price is not a major consideration.
Sorry if this (or similar) question has been posed previously.
Thanks in anticipation of your replies.

15/2.8
28/2
50/2
100/2

My choice would be absolutely 28/2. 15/2.8 is as good wide-angle as is possible I think. 50 and 100 are both macro lens, but pretty usable outside macro world. Both probably as Zeissy as possible. If you wanted lens with character, then 35/1.4 and 50/1.4 are good choice (for character, sharpness at 1.4 isnt much).

I had the Distagon 21 2.8 on a Canon 5DII, nice lens, maybe even a very nice lens, but that was all. Now, YMMV, but AFAIK for $1800+ and no AF very good is not good enough. I expected to be knocked out with the Zeiss but I wasn't. Frankly, to me it didn't look much different than pics from either of my 17-40 f/4's at the same focal length.
In absolute terms the Zeiss was a good lens, but in my mind you just can't separate that from the money you have to lay out to get it.
Good luck.

Probably the 21/2.8, but since I haven't tried it I'll vote for the 35/2 Distagon, mostly because Nikon doesn't have anything similar and because it really screams ZEISS! when looking at the images.

A drawback is that it's terribly difficult to focus correctly because of the very short focus throw.

I bought the ZF.2 21mm f2.8, ZF.2 35mm f1.4 and ZF.2 100mm MP. The 35mm and 100mm have been sold.

The 21mm Distagon is my favorite and truly remarkable and I don't think there is a rival in the Nikkor line up. I wish I had purchased it several years ago.

Other lenses are optically superb but were not worth it (to me) .

To me the 21mm Distagon is what epitomises ‘The Zeiss look’ - as you asked.

The 21 is definitely up there. Having owned the 17-40L, I can say that if there is enough copy-to-copy variation to account for the difference in image quality that I have seen between them, then a new record has been set, by orders of magnitude.

I disagree with the 50MP. It is a great lens, but it has some distinct flaws which make me like it less than the more modest 50P. The 35/1.4 is also up there, really great lens with beautiful rendering. The 85P is also great, similar to the 50P, but neither could probably be said to be the greatest Zeiss lens for Nikon.

Depending on what you like, I am guess it would be a battle between the 15, 21, 35/1.4, 100MP and 135/2. I don't own the first and last of these, hence the guesswork.

The ultimate Zeiss lens for Nikon will be the 55/1.4

When the word "ultimate" appears: sure you can! Or would you choose a Corvette over a Bugatti Veyron as an ultimate car?

My favourite selection of Z lenses for Nikon/Canon: 21/2.8,35/2,50/2MP,100/2MP.

18/3.5,25/2.8,28/2,50/1.4,85/1.4 that I have are excellent as well but the ones above go before any others.

Depending on what you shoot

Wide-field Landscape: 21/2.8
Reportage/Street: 25/2
Environmental Portrait: 35/1.4
Telephoto: 135 APO

Other focal lengths, I feel like you can get cheaper/more convenient (AF) alternatives.

I fail to understand : What is ultimate means in terms of lens. Speed? sharpness? CA? SA? Color? Bokeh? 3D? handling? Focal length?

You seems don't even care the focal length? and what this lens for? people? Landscape? Macro? which is most important factor if I want some lens. All Zeiss lens has Zeiss look for its design priority/goal and T* coating.

Just want get best of best? but what is the best for individual? People trash P85/P50, but it is closer to to ultimate to me than better MP100 to most of people.

Unless this lens gonna be used for some scientific project instead of image making.

Sorry to bring this but just need some clarification.

If I had to pickup only one it would be 2/35.

The 15/2.8 is incredibly impressive technically but without much character. Zeiss tends to go that way at the high end (Master Primes, for example). I suspect the new ultra high-end ZF's like the 55/1.4, of which I think the 15/2.8 is one in all but name, will go that direction.

The 21/2.8 gives you almost as much technical excellence with a ton of character. Ditto the 100/2. Can't wait to find out about the 135/2. The rest are blah (Canikon offerings are just as good, and add AF, for less money. *snore*)

Depends what you're into *shrug*

Gave me a chuckle, Lee, thanks. That is right, you see it in the movies, that 'this is amazing but no one but photographers notice' look.

I was going to say 'all of them' but you can get circumstances where some won't be so different, I suppose. I tend to notice the strong fingerprints of the MPs, 21mm and a lot of CY lenses that the OP ruled out of scope - sob.

I doubt Nikon ever made - or even dreamed about - anything that resembled the CY 35/1.4, the better zooms or the 21mm or...
