Mark - think that depends on the time of year but average lifespan is around 3 weeks I gather, so 1.5 weeks old for middle aged

. I was actually going on colouration - they can get much "redder" than this- almost like sunburn

That's a short life. I've seen the same thing here but the blue ones are bigger and blue 'til the end - but there's a myriad kinds of fly.
