p.1 #1 · Suggestions for giving this more oomph

I run into this frequently. Something is missing in this photo to give it some pop. Used Lightroom for editing this, but have Photoshop CS6. I lightened eyes, brown in face and nose as they were too dark.

Any suggestions of a method to try out, whether in LR or PS.

My quick take is to increase the tonal contrast as the dog, the wood and the wall are similar values.

Not much oomph for this one...some shots are just...you know...non oomph-able.

this requires a tight crop, even then though the eyes are cut off by those bars.

I would crop to remove the bit of green wall only
The big problem is that the tones are all too similar. I would get reduce the colour of the wall and ensure that the whites on the dog were good and white. Then add vibrance and mask it so it only affects the dog.
Brighten overall and sharpen and then add a crafty vignette.

Missing eye contact, both eyes being cut off. Can't make out either ear either. either either either

Remove every other upright on the bannister paint the wall and re-shot.

Adjusted color...added some saturation....added some contrast...blacks....dodged eyes...changed the lighting with a couple of vignettes....sharpened.
