I'll also go with the gloomy, foreboding look

All three images have their different merits, Helen, and all three are excellent.
I live near the Oregon Cascades- which are mostly a volcanic mountain range, and it's interesting to note how different our lava flows look compared to these. I mean, they are REALLY different.
Ours are so jagged that you'd cut your feet to ribbons trying to walk barefoot on them.
These look more foot-friendly .
I know there are different kinds of lava- but such a contrast is indeed a bit startling.

Thanks Charlie!
Most of the lava that I have come across in Iceland is not sharp. More bubbly and uneven, with some deep holes in between - which also makes it difficult to walk on.

I like them all and can hardly pick a fav. Maybe# 3 but then I go back to the two others and am no longer sure of my choice.
At what time of the year were these taken?
Phil.
These were taken in late June. Laki, like most of the interior of Iceland is only accessible in the 3-4 months of the summer and only with a 4x4. You have to ford quite a few rivers to get there.

Gorgeous. I like the color popping in #3, but I think #1 is my favorite overall with the road leading diagonally into the frame. In all of them I love the moody sky; it really adds to the remote, rugged feel of these shots. Nice job!

Thanks everyone for the feedback and the replies! On my dutch language forum there was quite a bit of criticism about the rock in image 2. I made a new version without the rock.
