p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Lofoten - 2 FM guys with Leica M9 and Sony Nex

In February I spent one week on the Lofoten together with my friend Philippe (Philber). The Lofoten islands are located in northern Norway and are in my opinion one of the most attractive places for landscape photography in Europe.

This was our second trip to the Lofoten in wintertime (not counting my failed trip in 2011 where I broke my leg just before entering the ferry to the Lofoten).

In addition to classical landscape photography we had planned to also shoot some aurora borealis. But since we were shooting all day starting 1-2 hours before sunrise and finishing 1-2 hours after sunset we just didn't have the energy for additional night shots.

There were many other photographers at the same time on the Lofoten, mostly for aurora shooting. But they were often driving around the whole night and sleeping during the day. You probably have to decide whether to shoot aurora or classical landscapes, both on the same trip is difficult.

I was using my Leica equipment (2 M9 with 18mm, 21mm, 28mm, 35mm, 50mm and 90mm lenses and a 1.8 ND filter), Philippe was using his Nex cameras with his Leica and Zeiss lenses.
The M9 worked perfectly on this trip and I'm quite satisfied with the result. Nevertheless is was probably my last trip with the Leica equipment, but that's another story.

I will post my images in batches of 10-15 images to give Philippe the chance to post his images of the same places in between, starting with the western end of the Lofoten: Å i Lofoten, Sørvågen and Moskenes.

Great pictures, Boris!

Interestingly, he and I have roughly the same number of keepers from the trip, but I out of 1000 pics, and Boris out of 2500, because he shoots every spot much more thourougly, with every lens, every aperture, with or without filters...
But when I scour my keepers for the same locations, I come up almost empty handed. I just didn't do that good. And one has to be careful with "good pictures" from the Lofoten, because getting "good pictures" is so easy (that is whyt they organise photo tours there, because, unless the weather is seriously un-co-operative, even mediocre photographers can, with a bit of help, come home with nice images. So, yeah, I have nice pictures from that area, and regrets that I was not more ruthless about working the spots until I did better.
Here are a couple of such "nice pictures" IMHO, N°1& 2

Now there are lots of places that I know Boris didn't shoot, primarily in or around Reine, which, geographically, has to be his next post. So here are some of them. As Boris said, we didn't shoot any aurora borealis, but we did have a few aurora normalis splendida, which we didn't mind shooting... N° 6 & 7

Thanks guys and great images, Philippe!

We had really great weather for 5-6 days. Temperatures were just below zero with fresh snow and a clear sky with some clouds.

The next batch of images was shot in and around Reine, one of the my favorite places on the Lofoten. From some of the hills I also tried my first stiched panorama shots ever. I used the Autopano tool for stiching.

Absolutely stunning. I'm not one to throw around superlatives when looking at photographs, but many of these do have a "wow" effect. Stunning location, but great light & execution as well.

Is there much to do here beyond photography? (genuine question)

Hm, eating fish. You can have cod, cod liver, cod tongue ...
And since you can get nothing else we tried all of this ;-)

Wow, Boris, I may have been there with you, it makes your pics no less impressive!
As my widest lens was 27mm (18mm Zeiss ZM on NEX), it is no surprise that I don't have the wide vistas that Bris shines at. Here is what I shot while he was up on his hilltop of endlessly attempting to get perfect light at his favorite junction just outside Reine, N°8, 9, 10 & 11
