Tried the 2x extender for a good amount of time on the 600mm f/4 IS today, and I was quite surprised/pleased that the results were usable.

Here's a shot

Makes me wonder what that native 1200mm lens is like....

Oh, no....

Wow! Beautiful vivid/contrasy shot!!!!!! The bokeh is very "smooth." Well, as for the EF 1200mm f/5.6L USM lens, there's only about ten in the entire world, and National Geographic owns two of them

By the way they're all hand made and cost $80,000 each - and no that doesn't include sales tax

Don't worry...I won't be lusting after the 1200mm.

Having that reach, though, is pretty amazing...

What the heck, we can dream...

1200mm lens

But it doesn't have IS? That can't be.

>>With Extender EF 1.4x or 2x. a whopping focal length of 1700mm f/8 or 2400mm f/11 can be obtained respectively.<<

It's a unique design. They've actually built a handle into the thing, so I guess you're supposed to carry it...

If you take that 600 and stack a 1.4x and 2x, you can get out to almost 1700mm. I've tried it with my 500 and, if the light is good, the results are
surprisingly good. On the other hand, if the light is bad, so are the results.
Also, amazingly, with a 1 series body, with the stacked converters you will
maintain AF because the camera only knows that the converter closest to
the lens is on board. With the 500 and stacked converters, AF was a bit slow, but it did lock in.

Interestingly enough (ok, for me anyway), the 1200/5.6 may not work with the dReb, which makes it useless IMO

From 300D Specs:
Quick-return half mirror
(Transmission:reflection ratio of 40:60, no mirror cut-off with EF 600mm f/4 or shorter lens)

Actually, I recall several bodies being rated the same way.

So let me understand this, you spend $80,000 for a lenss and you still need to tape the pins to use the 2x extender

Ahh...but even more interesting is in that ad that Joe linked to, there's a very prominant link to the 300D site under "Useful Info". So I don't know, Paul...maybe you should buy it anyway. And, hey, if it turns out the lens doesn't work, you can always offer it for sale here at FM on the Buy and Sell forum. 'Course the buyer may have to take out a loan just to pay the PayPal fees.

A lens like that for sale on eBay would probably make the news.

Joe,

Is that the copy you sent in for repair? That is a great shot by the way.

I don't think it needs IS; no one can ever handhold such a beast.
