sorry, but this is not any kind of "sale", it's simply the new pricing.

True - the new prices are just reflecting the price drop announced by apple today. Though at the same time BHPhotoVideo prices are (and were) less than the official price from Apple.

Amazingly, a high-density IPS LCD and hundreds of gigs (half a terabyte on the upper 15" model!) of flash storage don't come for free.

Tempting. I've been thinking of picking up a new laptop and this might very well be the first Apple computer I buy.

Better than my Apple Thunderbolt Display, MacBook Air display, or any other display I've ever seen. If you have the money, go for it, but if you don't, stick with what you have; the technology will always get cheaper as time goes on.

Would you guess the Retina display will come to the 17" model?

There is no currently mfg'd 17" MBP so they'd have to re-introduce it which seems somewhat unlikely.

John-

Maybe after mfg costs drop got to believe a 17" retina Mac book would be in the $5k range.

Yup, that's how it works when you're Apple. You tell the panel manufacturers you want something new like this, demand it be an Apple exclusive for x amount of time, and sell them at an outrageous profit (47% in the case of iPhones; next highest in the smartphone market is Samsung at 15%). After x amount of time, other people will get access to these panels and then you can have one at a fair price. It's usually just a year or two, though.

For those using the retina display: When you are profiling the screen, to what luminance value are you calibrating? I'm particularly interested in those who are concerned about photo editing and retouching where matching screen to print is being done.

Thank you,

John Caldwell
