The sky looks inordinately dark for the time of day and the shadow and hillside in the back, was this done in post?

Yes. Adams did it all the time. Those skies in Yosemite or on Moonrise were never like that in reality. Its kinda like I used a red filter the way I would with B&W film or my MM.
