Oh, IB Eckerl is a very good optics design company. I know those people a bit.
They made a lot of cinema and machine vision lenses and a lens testing projector - and at least one of the lenses for the lensbaby. They are able to construct lenses for different cost and quality.

Almost every lens is better without any kind of optic adapter. Excluding few Leica R. Tho you are right, its not that much needed now and certainly its way cheaper then buying such lens.
Btw. there is already 35mm f/0.95 lens for NEX (actually two of them, SLR Magic and Mitakon).
