Definitely a cool processing effect, but looking through the images, it feels like a just-for-the-sake-of-it kinda thing, until I get to your fifth shot, where the stars align and the effect is off-the-charts fantastic. Looks like a painting I'd wish I could afford.

Ben, all is done in LR4. I basically take the file and get the WB corrected then boost the shadows slightly and reduce highlights and the affect then is a preset from SLR Lounge's LR Effects system. I have just about every plug in available (Nik/OnOne/etc.) but I have found that the tonal contrast created by this one preset works so much better than either Nik or OnOne...
As you know almost every single HS gym (& football field for that matter) is poorly lit and I'm not one to set up strobes or use on camera flash. While many here have perfected the strobe setup in gyms, I still prefer going without flash since my cameras handle the high ISO well..
