michael, check out ll Bean and Eastern Mountain Sports for the round corkball head with lanyard. My Manfrotto 680B has the 1/4-20 and 3/38 screw thread and fits the 1/4-20 on the corkball head. In fact there an accessory mini-tripod leg set that screws in the bottom leg (for storage) and permits to cautiously use it a temporary tripod.
I comfortably mount my 70=200 and D800+battery grip on it while I reach into my bag or munch on a power bar.
I raise or lower the monopod height depending if I am going uphill, downhill or on level ground. If you undertake an African Safari in a Landrover this is what you will need.
If you weigh more than 50 lbs be certain to use the larger diameter legs first, I have not noticed any bending or permanent distortion in my decade of use.
