I would be interested if its less expensive than the Tokina lenses, and sharp across the frame at typical landscape apertures. I don't really need a fast wide angle lens, and I can easily get by without VR in a wide, so as long as the performance is good I would consider it since it will definitely be a smaller lens.

It supposedly has more aspherics and more ED elements than the current one (which is really quite poor wide open and just OK stopped down), so hopefully it will be significantly sharper.
I'm hoping they are not going to do something similar to the 24-85/3.5-4.5AFS - the non VR version was OK at 12MP and the new one with VR is slightly better at the wide and and worse at the long end despite being a new design. If Nikon is going to remake such lenses, please make them significantly better than the old versions!

Meh, I just don't see the point. If weight is a concern get a 20mm prime or use a kit lens. If price is a concern get a used 20-35mm or tokina 17-35. Unless its an astounding performer, I'm not really interested.

I want a nano coat version of the 17-35mm, Micro Nikkor 200mm and the 300mm f4. Also a VR on the 300mm would be great. The new 18-35mm could be great for lightweight travel lens - hopefully it's a nano coat as well. But I never have issues lugging my current rig even on long walks and hikes since I'm using the right bag and pouches from Lowepro.

Here we go with another must have lens..please a 400mm F5.6 or some 100-400mm range zoom they will sell like hotcakes, sometimes I want to kick Nikon in the arse!

I think you're right. The target audience could be the G trio owners who want to complete the set with an UWA... My Tamron 17-35 will suffice for now
The target audience is those converting from DX to FX and don't already have the stash of FX capable glass, and don't want to spend a huge wad of cash on the more expensive ultra wides. Right now Tokina has that market cornered for Nikon bodies since nobody else is offering a more affordable FX ultra wide.

I also hope their target audience is those who want to carry a light weight, high IQ optic that does not need to be as fast as f/2.8 or a constant f/4. I'm keeping my 17-35AFS for now, but if this new version of the 18-35 produces the IQ that those extra aspherics and ED elements should bring, then I may be switching out my UWA zooms . . . . .
If, on the other hand they pull a 24-85AFS VR redesign again, then I will be sorely disappointed.

Well, the MTF charts are available and while the 18-35 looks pretty good, it's not going to be better than the 16-35 except maybe at the extreme corners (and I think the corners of the 16-35 are still pretty good despite the severe distortion). It may be substantially better than the 17-35 though. These are all just the wide end measurements, so take with whatever salt you wish. It certainly looks like the weight vs. performance payoff might be worth it. Personally having just dropped cash for the 16-35 this won't be an option (plus I also plan on picking up the Rokinon 14mm as a lightweight UWA) but had I not just bought it would indeed be tempting.

It kind of make sense to release a lens like that but a 300 f4 VR, a 400 f5.6 VR and/or a 100-400 VR would fit a gaping hole in Nikon's lineup and would satisfy FX, DX and even CX users.
A lightweight 180 2.8 VR would hurt my pocket but would make me a happy beaver.

Well, looking at the MTF curves for both the 16-35/4 and the new 18-35/3.5-4.5 it appears the new lens has a chance of being very good stopped down. The 16-35/4 is certainly better wide open at both ends, but at least the new lens is in the ballpark, especially compared to the previous version which was not even close to the 16-35/4 at wide open apertures.
My own limited testing and that of photozone.de indicate that the 17-35AFS is about equal to (and in some areas superior to) the 16-35VR at equivalent apertures, even with the somewhat unimpressive MTF of the 17-35 at f/2.8. Thus there is hope for this new 18-35 design to get very good stopped down a bit, which is how many folks would likely be using it for most of their shots.
