Only to those who have shot with both of these lenses...

1) How is the sharpness compared when shot at f/2.8?
2) Does the build quality of the 28 1.8G bother you?
3) Do you favor the 24mm or 28mm Focal Length better?

Cheers! and Thanks!

1. By 2.8, the 24 has caught up significantly in the corners. Wide open, the 24 corner softness is noticeable compared to the 28.

2. Yes. In fact, that's the biggest issue I have with the lens. Field curvature and focus shift in my use hasn't been particularly noticeable and surely not bothersome, but the 28 is a long shot off from any lens to sit in my bag in a long while. It feels poorly weighted on bigger bodies (D700 and D3 size), but less so on smaller ones (up to D600). I like the size and shape of pro lenses not because it makes me feel cooler outside, but because they feel reassuring and I shoot steadier with gear on the heavier side; this should speak testaments for how much the image quality makes up for it in.

3. Depends on what other lenses I have. If I went with a 24, I'd want something slightly longer, either 35 or 50 to complement it. 28 seems to be the 1-lens solution to this mindset; despite just a 4mm difference (if perhaps you remember how much of a mental difference that 1mm on the wide end made on a tamron 17-50 compared to the 18-55 kit lens )

Side note- I find that the 28 is far better against flare.

1. Buy 24 only if you need to shoot at f1.4. At f2.8 there is little or no difference.

2. I agree that the focusing ring could be better... but I like the size and the weight of 28. The new f/1.8 trinity 28/50/85 is my default kit for street and travel while the f/1.4 kit is the default for events. I must recognize that I can do events as well with f/1.8 trinity but sometimes I need f/1.4 for critical work.

3. If is one lens solution I would prefer 28. For a multiple lenses kit I'd choose 24/35/50/85

1. I shoot mostly landscapes, but when I use these two for things like stars, nighttime, 2.8 looks pretty good on both - although my experience is VERY limited. I CAN tell you both lenses are crazy sharp at landscape apertures, WAY better than my 24-70 (and I have a very good copy of that lens)

2. Honestly, I'm not really put off at all by the build quality of the 28. It's not in the same league as the 24, but it's still good. (And I'm sometimes pretty tough on gear). The flip side, as was mentioned above, is the 28 is small and lightweight.

3. Personally, if I had to pick one I'd go for the 24. I like having a little wider view and the 1.4 comes in handy at times (not that 1.8 isn't still pretty great).

thanks for your input and insight! It seems as though the 28 focal length would be the 1-lens solution between the 35 and 50 and 24.

Yes, I mainly shoot at 2.8 for a good balance of sharpness and bokeh. Only will I shoot wide open with natural lighting but even then, I'm prone to stop down to 2.8.

Yes, I mainly shoot 90% of my work with my 85 1.4g and need a decent/top performer on the standard/wide end. I shoot a lot of urban area during my 'photo adventures' when I'm not in the studio or on location doing portraits and love how the 28 1.8 is weather sealed and also a top performer for sharpness. and since I won't be using it that often it makes more sense to purchase it over the 24 1.4. I was even thinking of the Sigmar 35 1.4 but I was worried about it not being weather sealed.
