p.1 #1 · My First Newborn Session - Critiques are Welcomed!

This is my first newborn shoot. I'd love to get more advice. I am more of an automotive shooter. I didn't know these little ones move around so much until he fell asleep at the end. Overall I enjoyed the photoshoot.

i think 4 and 5 are my favorites, I feel like the others are a tad cool or over exposed in some of them. cute baby!! good angles too!

Looking good.

But consider the DOF. Why so shallow? Did you shoot wide open due to lack of light or was it a considered choice to blur parts of the baby?

#1 for example has a nice clean background that doesn't need blurring. But the baby's chin is blurred.

#2. Blurring here is really helping the photo. Baby is clear, blanket gets blurred.

The last shot is my pick of the bunch.

I agree, extreme DOF and blurring is distracting, also the skin color seems off (WB?)

I love the DOF very nice

Some have some pretty strong highlights, I would crop them off if possible

I was excited to use my sigma 35mm f/1.4 that's why haha. Next time I will open it up. As for the highlights I think my monitor was a bit low in its brightness. Next time I will fix it. As for the skin any advice? The baby skin is close purple so I did what I can to fix it. I used light room mostly lowering the clarity on the skin and add luminance to the skin.

You said : "Next time I will open it up"

The expression is "stop it down" to change aperture from say, f1.4 to f4. Open it up is the other way.
