With the 1.3x format gone, Canon will most likely introduce the next generation tech (almost) simultaneously on the high-MP body + 7DII.
I think the 7D2 will see an incremental update in sensor technology but not at the Sony Exmor level. It's a camera designed around action photography and I don't believe low ISO DR will be a priority. They still want to keep this at a mid level price and there are greater needs then that for the role this body serves.
Much more likely to see the Sony Exmor type of technology on a high MP FF body.
1) SNR (really important - on every ISO)
2) colors
3) DR
Otherwise for me, rest of camera is fine. Maybe bit more sensitive center point. And if they wanted to do something different, change crop to 1.5 or 1.4.
My 3 for this one, not necessarily in priority order:
1. AF engine similar to 5D3/1DX (not going to happen, but one can wish). Next best would be to pull up the 1D4 system.
2. A stop better high ISO
3. Build similar to 5D3
If they really wanted to hit a home run with the 7D2, they'd revive the 1D4 guts and put it in the 5D3 body and call it a 3D. MSRP it at around $2500 and street price of $2K. This would require very little R&D, which lower the cost investment.
I would be interested in a crop camera if Canon put in the 5DMKII autofocus type system and a new sensor that was cleaner at low ISO, 1 stop better at high iso over the older model and have the camera shoot at 10 fps. I also expect that the camera will have improved weather sealing and two card slots. Not sure how much I would pay for it but with the new super telephones being so expensive having a high end crop featured camera makes more sense now.

Protection of 5D3/1DX most likely..
Canon usually makes sense only from pure money part. And they can as market leaders. Not that I like it tho..
Why bother with a 7D2 then? How do they put the same old AF in their only top speed+reach camera? Maybe they won't but wow. And don't forget the cam should be good for another 2-3 years.
They won't be market leaders for long in that segment if they don't.
i think the existing AF is great. Build is good... in fact, for me they could keep it all the same except for the sensor which id love the 6D's FF or a 1dIV's 1.3.... give the XXD models back some dignity. And dont tell me to get a 6D!
An interview with Canon's camera boss Mr. Maeda is making rounds on the forums. Here's one of the better translations that I've seen. From the interview:
... And while we are, of course, developing [7D's] successor, itll be one that incorporates a certain number of innovative technologies. We will not be putting out a product with merely better specs, but one that has evolved into new territory.
As many have been speculating here, I see the 7D evolving into a true sports body.
I wonder, though, if evolving 'into new territory' means just that - or something else .
Btw, in Google's auto-translation (from Mr. Roboto), the interview mentions that the 7DII 'is not the story of the day'.
That is, the 7DII doesn't appear to be scheduled for immediate release.
The only things I really want to see improved in my 7D are:
-improved AF up to or beyond f/8 for 1.4 + 100-400 for wildlife.
-dual cards CF + SD
-a few more MP would be nice
For wildlife, the 7D as it stands right now is pretty hard to beat.
24.1mp APS-C Sensor
Dual DIGIC V
10fps
Dual Memory Card Slots (Unknown configuration)
61 AF Points (I wonder if well get red focus points in AIS?)
3.2″ LCD
Build quality like 5D3
GPS & Wifi
$2199 ($500 more than the 7D at launch, Id like to see such a camera come in under $2000)
ISO Performance to get close to the 5D3
Lots of video features

They say its likely for the end of summer which mercifully will be too let for me this year so that will give me the chance to wait a while for the price to ease off a little

The ONLY thing not on that list that I'd like is single-point AF at f/8. But it won't be a deal breaker, as my non-reporting 1.4TC works fine with my 400 5.6L on my current 7D. But it'd still be nice to have so I don't have to try and cheat the cameras features to get it to work.
