Anyone have an idea of the value of a 400 2.8 non-IS? I found one locally for about $2500 that is in good condition and works perfectly. I am just not sure of the value of it (but it sounds pretty good) so wanted to check and see if anyone here would have an idea.
That sounds like a great deal to me, depending on condition. I assume this is the Mark I. The Mark II goes for quite a bit more... in between the Mark I non-IS and Mark I IS.

I'll have to look.. I didnt realize there were two versions on the non-IS..
Sounds like a good to excellent price. As Mike says, it depends on condition and whether it's Mk I or Mk II. At worst, that price is about $500 below expectations for an eBay sale. Check the Lens Price Database, Lens$db, for more info.
A 400mm like you describe, if selling in EX condition, would net you $2430 from KEH's used gear department...just checked for ya
If includes the hood and case it would be the same...
I don't know first hand, but from what I've heard the first version has some issues with autofocus on the newer bodies, so I'd try to stay away from the version I.
I shoot a Non-IS MKII. It's lighter and sharper than the MK I. There were many who felt the MKII non-IS was sharper than the MKI IS. I don't know about that... All I know is mine is still a smok'in hot lens. If you can find a good copy at a good price I wouldn't shy away...
I shoot mine with a 1d4 & a 5d3, no focus issues at all.
