So it will be nice to AF now at f8 with an extender. Only a few more months to wait. However, I have a question. Is the f8 extender update only applicable to Canon extenders or will it work also on Kenko, Tamron and Sigma reporting teleconverters and extenders? Any clarification on this is greatly appreciated.

I understand f/8 already works with the Kenko extenders, but most consider the IQ hit too much, particularly with the 2x.
To be honest, my 2X doesn't degrade much qualify and mine is the cheap Digital Concepts one. Usually the corners degrade slightly but usually when you are isolating a subject corners don't matter much.
I have the even cheaper Tamron C-AF 1.4 ($80.00) and the Digital Concepts 2X ($80.00) and I and a friend compared them to the more expensive reporting kenko and third party extender and there is little to no significant difference. Both are great! The non reporting cheaper extenders work faster and have the advantage of working at f8. I have a Kenko 3X and cant wait to autofocus with a 2.8 lens with the future firmware update. Image quality is great with 3X when stopped down a little. Just cant wait for the autofocus.
