My 1st try at raw to jpeg convert and pp in DPP. Suggestions on improvement or what I could do differently to make it better would be appreciated. Thanks Dave

I donít know the software you are using David. Look for fill light, shadow/highlight or sliders that allow you to adjust the shadow area and bring it up a bit on the second.

You captured some very nice detail. Even better than adjusting in PP is to get a good capture to start with and some fill flash would light the shadows nicely and create some catch light in the eye which can help bring youíre subject to life.

That Raptor would be an Eastern Red-tailed Hawk.

Thanks Thomas. How can you tell? I didn't get a tail shot, it was too far away, dark and blurry.

Nice shot. Only adults have the red tail. They have a belly band which is a dark band of streaks along the lower belly leaving most of the upper belly and chest light. They also have what is called a patagial patch on the wing. It's a dark patch along the edge of the part of the wing which you might call the shoulder. Other hawks have slightly different markings, and red-tails are extremely variable but these are the things I look for to ID them.
