p.1 #1 · My next lens will be a 100-400L if I have my way
Now the question is: when not attached to a body how do you transport it around? Normally I use a Think Tank pouch for storage and transportation except my 70-200f2.8LIS which I use a LowePro S&F Lens Exchange Case 200 AW and alternate the 70-200 with my 17-55 or 24-70. Now I will have 2 great bodies the 40D and 7D. So lens swapping will be toned down some but they will be times that ill wish to swap lenses to something other than the 100-400 while in the field what do you use?
p.1 #2 · My next lens will be a 100-400L if I have my way
I wish I could say the same, but there has been no announcement of a new 100-400 yet. The current 100-400 is only a mid-sized lens and will fit in numerous bags and backpacks. I have 9-10 Tamracs, Lowepros and Think Tank bags/backpacks that a 100-400 easily fits into.

I purchased a bag that can accommodate all my gear that I use often. Carries a 7D, 70-200 2.8. 100-400L, 50 1.8, 17-50 2.8 and space for a charger. Also has a zippered from section that can carry documents, manuals etc. Lowepro mini trekka.

I generally use Op/Tech SnootBoots for my 70-200/2.8L IS II and 100-400L, with hoods reversed. Same size, LW (large wide). I have different sets of lenses for different uses. I most often use the 100-400L IS with the 24-105L and a small ultra-wide like the 18 ZE.
I also have a pair of Lens Exchange Case 200AW, which I most often use for events for four lenses on two bodies; typically 16-35L, 24-70/2.8L II, 70-200/2.8L IS II, and 85/1.2L II. The 100-400L will fit in a Lens Exchange Case 200AW. It's a tight fit, like the 70-200, but it works, both with hoods reversed.
p.1 #5 · My next lens will be a 100-400L if I have my way
My 100-400 L fits nicely in my LowePro AW backpack with several lenses and a choice of options like one body and a flash or two bodies. Since the pack has velcro adjustable compartments I wouldn't think of bothering with a case for the 100-400 alone. However, the lens does come with a case for it. I need to dig that out and use it when I'm taking just the LowePro TLZ (Top Loader Zoom) with the camera + 100 macro.
p.1 #6 · My next lens will be a 100-400L if I have my way
I just bought one (great time to buy one by the way, $1389 at BH untill 2/3) so I've strarted considering how I'm going to shift my gear to accomadate the new lens. I use a pelican 1510 and a Dakine sequence. It's going to get tight in the Sequence with 2 bodies and 5-6 lenses.

Monito, which TLZ do you use the 45 or 50/55? I see they have two? Currently I have the LP slingshot 100 AW for a quick day trip and have the LP Roller as the mothership. The TLZ looks just right in size for a day outing..

I have a super sharp copy of the 100-400L and my new 70-200L 2.8 II +1.4X renders the 100-400L as a virtual ornament. The new 70-200 is faster, sharper, even to 320 with the 1.4X. The 100-400 drops of in sharpness beyond 350mm and only peaks at around f8.

One of the nice things about the 100-400mmL is that telescoped fully, it fits the same space as a 70-200mm f/2.8, which makes it easy to store and carry. The 400mm f/5.6L is not so easy to fit into a smaller bag.

Interesting, have you tried the 2x extender on your 70-200?
