We have this plant in our garden that flowers annually - it is peculiar in that when it flowers it emits the stench of rotting flesh to attract its pollinators - my African Gardner tells me its used to mark graves in his county Malawi.
I have several of these Stapelia, too, in coastal Southern California, where they can go for years without blooming. The rotten meat smell isn't too strong, and the flowers are incredible. Some flowers have much more purple and look like velvet--providing much more contrast with the shiny blue-bottle carrion flies. Thanks Ramkat for sharing the photo and information.
