Folks, you've been trolled and you have taken the bait.

Instead of merely reporting the interesting information that Nikon is trying its fourth supplier for its sensors, the original post went on a micro-rant against Canon. Now we have a thread full of the same-old same-old about Canon's camera's, system, and lenses.

We see that all FF brands offer the essentials nowadays, go 1.4 and 1.8/ 24/50/85 the f4 zoom you mention, the 2.8 zooms. Today the market is open and unlike 4 years ago Canon hasn't all the aces in their hands. I think Nikon is package wise as good now. we may ask us if the exclusive Canon lenses are really of great use to the non forum shooter

Quite honestly I disagree! We have seen Nikon, Tamron and Sigma focussing on OS VC and VR lenses, starting with the great 16-35 VR going to the Tamron 24-70 and then the new 70-200VR you have an unmatched quality package combined with the D800. I also have to admit that Nikon's flash systems have worked great for years now.

IMO Canon is tiptoeing around the best possible package to form their market, like we can see with the double 24-70 proposition or the 5D3 which hasnt a top rated sensor.

Are you saying the tamron 24-70 is better quality than canons? Or just because it has IS?

I suppose that depends on the individual user's purchasing habits. I tend to use my cameras for many years. I shot with an EOS A2E for over 10 years. My 5D2 is nearly 4 years old and still takes the same amazing images it did in 2008 and I still dig using it. I can play it like a piano and it never misses what I shoot. Although I could afford one, I wasn't tempted by the 5D3 or 1DX and wouldn't bother updating unless my 5D2 is beyond reasonable repair. However, if you're the sort to upgrade with each succeeding generation, you're bound to be disappointed with the tiny evolutionary changes.

Okay, the one spec that would make me reach for my plastic is the return of ECF. I loved that feature on my film cameras and am not too fond of using a slow joystick just to select an AF point. Oddly, I just read a rumor Sony is planning to add their flavor of ECF to an upcoming model.

Ok Tamron makes a handful of VC lenses and it is only in the last two years it even got around to it's own version of USM. I was talking about a complete lens line-up including superteles, tilt-shift, specialist macro, ultrafast glass, DO lenses etc. Nikon is the only manufacturer close to Canon in this regard, while Sigma is constantly expanding but still has large holes in the lineup.

Truth in both posts . However, whilst I have good Canon glass I do not intend to become embroiled in body wars.
If starting out anew one has many factors to take into consideration. Who knows in 20 years time Canon & Nikon could go the way of HMV. I doubt it but these days anything could eventuate.

400 5.6
300 4 IS
135 2
50 1.2
85 1.2
17 T/S

The 300/400 are great budget lenses (budget in price only, not performance)
The 135 is exceptional
50/85 are more 'niche' but have a huge following in the portrait/studio/wedding areas

I think the lens offerings from Canon still push them ahead of the other companies (other being only Nikon in the SLR market). I haven't had good success with other brands in the past. I've had some high spec Sigma and Tamron lenses and the focusing was slow and build quality wasn't great. The newest releases sound like they may have turned the corner, but that is only a few select lenses released in the last year.

Well of course first we'd have to accept your tenet that Canon's sensor are basically utter crap in the first place and that we are all suffering terribly from their lack of innovation. Meanwhile Nikon innovations of recent times consist of employing Sony sensors and ....

Toshiba makes the sensor for some D700. I think early batches. So Toshiba is not a NKOTB. Ooohh baby!

I believe earth and humanity has more good going for it than bad. Nevertheless, watch CNN for 30 minutes and you'd think we're all going to hell in a hand basket. Most people prefer to dwell on the bad, nasty and as mean rather than the good, clean and nice. Gear forums are no exception to this unfortunate taste.

Why does it matter who manufactures the sensor for Nikon? Overall, the latest Nikon cameras to be released have been sweet, even if they don't actually make their own sensor. I'd love to see Canon come out with their own high mpix greater DR camera so we could stop all this stupid bickering over whose system is better.

Please read the OP and what it is about. There are positive aspects of Canon of course (as I said above) and you can further extend on them if you desire to do so. But the OP referred to sensor technology.....IMO a hard time to argue for Canon currently in this regard.

' a rather silly and inflamatory title (that has gotten the desired response). In that context some responded saying that Canon has many areas of 'inspiration' since a DSLR system is more than a single technical aspect of the sensor.

Why should I care about Canon matching up with their current competition? I picked a system that is best for me and someday if there's another system that is better for me then I'll buy that system. I really don't care about Canon the company. I'm going to let Canon worry about their business and competition. All I am concern now is having a system that I am happy with.
