p.1 #1 · Rio Grande Pastels

Spent a week camping, hiking and photographing Big Bend National Park this past week. Endured desert rain and snow showers and thoroughly enjoyed myself. The last night I was there, I was out with my wife, stepdaughter and son in law looking to capture a good sunset for my step daughter (she is a budding wedding photog in Tx). We went to a promising spot I had scoped out a few days before on the Hot Springs Trail coming out of the Rio Grande Village and had a feeling due to the skies that it was going to be a light show. Photographing the sun as it dipped below the horizon, I turned and noticed the fantastic light show behind us. I turned around and fired off one. The brilliant pink pastels began to fade immediately and were completely gone in less than 2 minutes. I managed 3 frames and this is the first I fired off. This is almost SOOC with some slight tweaking in LR4. The colors were this brilliant, no saturation added. Though not the best shot I took, it was one of the last few shots I took on this trip and one of the first I opened upon return. I will post more as I work my way through the week we were there.

Beautiful colors. I had a similar experience once in Joshua Tree national park. The whole area was flooded magenta after sunset.

Sure wished these moments lasted a little longer but you did manage to squeeze off a pretty nice shot.

Pretty. Yeah it's cool when the colorful light completely engulfs the scene.
Way to be there and ready!

Very nice and beautiful light. I have pleasant memories of Big Bend from a few years ago and it's on my list of places to go again, hopefully next spring. Please post more!

Thank you oke and AMaji. Oke, BBNP is beautiful. This is twice in the last 6 months I have been and still have so much to see there. I think I need at least another week to get to get a real feel for it. And yes, I will post more from the trip.

I really like the color balance that you have chosen. Most people would make it too red and earthy but your colors have given a new way of treating such pictures. Thank you so much, learning a lot!

Thank you. I try to keep it true to my eye when out shooting however I am prone towards changing wb towards the warmer end of the spectrum. I am a sucker for soft pastels and the whole land had turned this nice soft hue of reddish pink. I wanted to portray the beauty provided at that moment of which I would not be able to improve upon, IMO, in regards to the natural color palette.
