Got tired of waiting for the long rumored 24MP DX D400... I've been shooting the D300 for 5 years and really enjoyed it. I need DX most of the time for my 300 f/4 coupled with a 1.4 TC. I also love landscape photography and am really getting more into people photography too.

The D800 seemed like the best of both worlds for me. 36MP sensor for landscape and people pics will be waaaay cool and DX mode still yields 18-20 MB files (4800 X 3200) at 5-6 FPS. Soooooo... I picked up one of the Nikon Factory Refurbs from Adorama for $2,299. Perfect condition out of the box, 75 actuations, no left focus issue.

On my first outing I immediately noticed that focus acquisition and tracking even with the TC is VASTLY improved over my often erratic D300 setup. So any OOF images now are all on me.

These were all shot in DX mode and some were cropped significantly, so I'm happy with the IQ too. I can't wait to get some FF opportunities.

Thanks for having a look. All C&C and questions are greatly encouraged and most appreciated.

Thanks so much for the good words Tom. I'm pretty excited about the possibilities with the D800 as its a significant improvement in so many ways over the D300.

Thanks Khai. These images are more of a test run than anything else to get a feel for its capabilities, very pleased so far. And yes... there will be plenty more images to come.

Thanks Lil. I'm quite impressed from my first outing with the D800, looks like a very capable tool for my needs. Would like to have higher FPS, but its just a hair slower than the D300 so not really an issue. I'm glad you and Steve got out shooting, great job on the Cormie.

Yes it is a joy to shoot with, really stoked on the significant upgrade from the D300 in every way. I'm really excited to see what this baby will do on FX landscape and people photography too... I stepped up and got the 24-70 2.8 G also. Only problem is that I can't stop smiling.

There are those that have 'the gear' and are not up to extracting the quality of images the gear offers and there are those that have the talent, dedication and eye for getting all that is put in front of them with the right gear..................................
Guess where you fit in The IQ is scary good Kirk and just what you have earned over the years, you are certainly 100% worthy of this new body my friend!

It is apparent that this body pulls in the detail as well as the subtle tonal variations and your quality PP skills also show through..........There isn't one to find fault with here and as mentioned the Scoter is one fab exposure!

Congrats Kirk, this should have been in your hands earlier and for the $$ sure seems to be a value, say, do Canon lenses fit on this body

Sweeetness !

Fantastic set Kirk !! Love them all. Congratulations on the new camera !
I sold my D300 about a year after getting the D7000. Now I am waiting for the D7000 upgrade or the D400. Really want better A/F and low light capability.

Seeing yours and Wills shots with the D800 , well makes me want to get one. Just concerned it is more camera than I am ready for .

Thanks Ron. It's a very easy transition as the camera setup is very familiar. Really excited and looking forward to great years ahead with this tool.
